Dad gummit I found a brown recluse spider upstairs...
I guess I'm like Lizards when it comes to those things, had never seen one in the house before today. Anyways it was in the upstairs storage room behind a bookcase, and while I'm thinking of bombing the house I don't want to entice the damn things to come downstairs. What do yall think?

Bad, bad news. Unfortunately if you got one theres usually more. Just found three brown widows w/ eggs underneath my kids picnic table. Glad I found them first.

Get a pro to bomb the place. Those spiders leave nasty reminders when they bite.

Here's the *^%*&! little bugger.
http://www.critterridders.com/brown_recluse1.jpg and... http://www.everythingabout.net/artic...use_spider.jpg They are often called "Fiddlebacks". If you look closely, you see an almost perfect violin shape on the top of the thorax. Here's what he can do, if he doesn't kill you, that is. http://thefuntimesguide.com/images/blogs/brown_recluse_spider_bite_Day10.jpg Get professional help NOW! F.Rod |

Found this map online. It's a big range but I'm sure they've been found outside of it. It seems that they get moved around on trucks and in boxes, etc.
As to NJ I found this "An updated revision of the genus by Gertsch and Ennik (1983) reported a few records from ,......, New Jersey,...... Most of these peripheral records were interceptions of one or two specimens, not evidence of established populations. Last edited by 3dkicker; 07-26-06 at 03:24 PM. |

What is scary about the recluse is how small they are, they are nondescript they have a tendency to live in shoes, socks, behind beds, behind dressers - they are reclusive. But I am trying to clean up the dang house, so now every time I pick something up I get to think about necrotic wounds and such to my casting hand.
And I would get a pro in here to take them out, if I had the cash. But considering this old dump, I don't think a pro could do a thing if they have already established themselves. Except maybe fumigate the upstairs good enought that they branch out. Black widows in the yard, brown recluses upstairs, possums under the house. Great.

Brown Recluse
The brown recluse spider, (loxosceles reclusa), can also inflict a very dangerous bite. The initial pain associated with the bite is not intense, and is generally less troublesome than a bee sting. Within 8 to 12 hours the pain becomes quite intense, and over a period of a few days a large ulcerous sore forms. This sore heals very slowly and often leaves a large, ugly disfiguring scar. Brown Recluse Bite and Infection Warning - Pictures Are Graphic ! Subject Unknown - Infection Time 6-8 weeks. Click On Each For A Larger Image The brown recluse is soft-bodied and secretive species found in homes and other outbuildings. The adult body varies from 1/3- to 1/2inch in length, with the arrangement of the legs producing a larger overall size of 1 inch diameter or greater. The body is yellow to dark brown, and has a rather distinctive darker brown violin shaped mark on the top of the cephalothorax. Recluse Spiders are often colored tan, but can be dark brown to almost white in appearance.

What I like about your post is the warning that the pics are graphic, only 1/10 of an inch above the graphic pic. Lol. Makes me feel better.
Doing some reading up and one guy said bombs help spread the infestation, so I might just do glue traps. Or move.
