Default Weekly Lake Fork Report From Guide Jim Reaneau

Well, the cool weather has been a welcome site this week. The mornings are cool and you almost need a lite jacket to make the first run of the morning. This is the time of the year where we all get frisky with the cool nights. The fish have felt the same feeling with the schooling activity. They are not all over the lake but scattered. This action can be early or mid day. You will just have to keep and eye out for them. Keep a tail spinner or lipless crank bait handy as this will be the bait of choice. There is a little top water action very early but it stops pretty quick. Pop’r type baits and the frog has been my choice. Weed beds and points are the most likely areas. The Lake Fork Tackle Twitch worm fished wacky has been very good around grass all day. Cover plenty of water and when you get bit slow down and work this area well before moving on. The Lake Fork Tackle Zig Zag has been good weightless in the same above areas. The Wave Tiki Stick weightless is another good bet. Never forget about a spinner bait this time of year as the willow leaf blade looks just like a shad swimming through the water. This is a good deep water bait fished off the bottom with a pull and let settle back down. The strike will be on the fall most of the time. My drop shot bite has been off and on lately but the Texas and Carolina rig bite has been good. Lake Fork Tackle Ring Fries both small and large sizes along with the baby creature have been good on the deep humps and points. This is a good pattern around the grass beds and timbered points. The weekend is calling for a cold front with rain. The lake came up and inch or two but nothing to talk about. Maybe with the weekend rain we will come up a little more.
The McDonald tournament is just around the corner and this is a time to get both gear and boat in good working order. Check out your boat to ensure all the regular stuff is working horn, kill switch, lights, throw cushion, and don’t forget most of all your fishing license expire today. I have seen many people get disqualified for this infraction. Get you a good measuring board. Get you and your buddy and go through a couple of drills so you can remind each other of what not to do during the day. Get your fishing plan setup. Don’t just come out and wing it. Have a plan and stay with it. I have dates open and if you want to book a trip to get and ideal of what and where give me a call.
