Not always true, sometimes bass want fast lures in cold water.
Personally I think gettin a bass on patterns is hardest thign to do. I can figure them out yes, but it will take me 2-3 days to actually fully develop or at least get enogh info to rule out what lures are needed, what arnt etc etc. It comes wiht experience.

dude, the heck with all them books and stuff..been there, done that.your BEST info will come from time on the water. You ask lots of questions, which is cool because thats how you learn, but take some of the time you spend here on this site or on the computer and hit the water!!If it's cold, well work on your winter pattern.Bass can be caught all year long, and while there is a so-called "set of rules"for where and when to use a lure,it isn't set in stone.Don't try to master everything in your tackle box.Take one lure, fish it till you have the utmost confidence in it,and move on to another lure. It's better to be good with a few lures than have a tackle box full of stuff you dont have confidence in.Start with a spinnerbait, hands down the easiest, fish catchingest, can be used anytime anywhere lure.Remember nothing teaches like time on the water!!

Let's throw something else in the stew. If you caught fish on a bank with all the right types of cover and or structure one day, don't be suprised if you go back to the same bank the next day and the fish aren't there. Fish have a tendency to do just that, they move. They might have moved down the bank, they may have fed before you arrived or they may have move out into deeper water and suspended. Many fisherman have overlooked this sort of situation, "The fish weren't biting today", "The fish have lockjaw", "I couldn't buy a bite today." All excuses we have all used at one time or another. I firmly believe if the fish are there somewhere, they are catchable no matter what the situation. Rising and falling water make the fish do just that. Move. Rising water with a few days of stability, then fish shallow, flip to cover, pitch, worm, etc. Falling water move the fish out to suspend until stability has been achieved. So having said all that, don't get disapointed if you don't catch anything. Patterns sometimes hard to figure out until it's too late, but rely on the pattern because it will be the best way you'll learn how to catch fish. Long winded huh.

bassguy,
couldn't said it any better, nothing worse than dropping water levels, they pull water all the time at ky lake and also the ohio river, it really pulls the fish back. |

i fished for about 4 hours, with a half hour break in between. i tried two different colors of powerworm, one that looks just like a real worm and one in pumkinseed with a chartruse tail. i was using pumkinseed first but then i remembered chartruse was for murky water so i switched. the i threw my popper that i made for the hell of it, and a yum dinger and a senko knockoff by zoom. i threw a fluke for like 2 casts but then i left. i did like 20 casts, then busted my avocets bail though. so that took some time.

jb fallen water levels tend to pull the fish off the back..unless your fishing high rock lake then they get right shallow..water level rises and they back off the bank..this is the only lake i have seen with this odd ball fluxuation movement.
