OK, I made the final changes to my version of the JIKA rig. I purchased the Gamakatsu Superline EWG ringed hooks and added my own weight with a #1 splitring, I then powder coated the weight.
I am very happy with the final version and look forward to actually getting to fish this thing. ![]()

The bait is a newer bait by Hag's, called the Undertaker Junior, the color is Green Sweet Tator.
These baits float very well.

Hey all, just wanted to update this thread. Kevin (Pro Reel) and I were able to get out for a while today at a watershed that Kevin has access to. The conditions were not great with steady winds at around 20-25 m.p.h. and gusts that were stronger than that, but we managed to find a little shelter from the wind and locate some willing bass. All in all I figure we put somewhere between 30-40 bass in the boat with a couple of the nicer ones being in the 18" range.
We fished a number of baits during the day, jigs, jerkbaits, spinnerbaits, and lipless cranks. Later in the afternoon I decided that I would try an old favorite of mine, the LFT Tube Craw in blue/black, as I was rigging it up I remembered that I had my JIKA rigs with me and thought that the very thick cover we were fishing would give it a good test. It was a good choice, the rig fished through the thickest cover without ever acting like it was going to snag and the fish really liked the action. I caught 90% of my fish on the Jika rig and LFT tube craw. If you have not fished this rig yet, I would highly recommend that you get yourself some, it was allot of fun to fish. ![]()

I have a bunch of jig rigs in the process of being built. I just need to finish them and powdercoat. I was mostly fishing jigs and a craw while Tav was fishing the jika. We caught about the same amount of fish in the same area, but I must say it was avery good comparison because I had to clean weeds off my jig on every cast and tavs jika rig came through it much better. You would think that a jig would slide through gunk better than the jika that has the extra clips ans such, but it is actually more weedless. I finnaly switched to an internally weighted tube bait and that was the only thing that was as weedless as the jika

My Son and I were able to get out this weekend, I managed to catch a couple of descent bass, my son was using smaller tubes and caught several crappie and couple of small bass. The Jika rig is what I used and hooked up with the larger of the two bass on the 3rd cast.
![]() ![]() The larger of the two went 3.3 on my digital scale.

Did you end up going away from the Gammy hooks with the rings on them? You've got several different versions, have you decided on one that you like the best or still experimenting? I see you have some with bell weights, some with cylindrical weights, one with a swivel on the weight, different sized split rings.
I like the looks of the version with the Undertaker, ringed hook and cylindrical weight the best. I am going to make some up and was really just wondering what version you recommended.

Joe, I have fished several different versions, and they all seem to work about the same. The one that I like the best is with the Gammy Ringed hook, it is PN 74414R for a 4/0 and 74412R for a 2/0 hook. I have moved to yet another weight, that a local guy has been pouring for me, they are about a mix between bell and cylindrical with a crane swivel in the top.
![]() Honestly I have not noticed any difference between all of the different versions that I have shown, I will say that I prefer the heavier weights, 3/8 and 1/2, they come through the weeds and thick stuff great and you can feel them on the bottom the whole time.

Cool, thanks. I definitely like the ringed hooks, I will use those for sure. I've got a variety of drop shot weights, I'm sure the little line clip could be bent out to a more rounded shape. Whether or not the clip can handle being bent without breaking is another story. Standard lead barrel weights are easy to come by though. I will just have to play with it and see what I come up with. Thanks for sharing your experiences with this cool new rig.

Joe, you pretty much asked the question I was about to type here. I was looking for cylindrical weights, but all I could find at Academy and Bass Pro here are bell-shaped weights. I was about to ask if it made much of a difference in hangups. Good info again, Tony.

If you want to use something that is very close to what comes on the actual Jika rig, these are as close as I have found. They are a tungsten weight made by Picasso, you can find them a few different places.

Alright, I have a couple of questions:
1.) When/why would you fish this rig? 2.) How do you fish this rig 3.) Where would this rig be most effective? Thanks guys! |
