Billy, that looks NASTY!

Nothing here-yet. Zebra muscles are starting to make inroads in North Texas. They have been found in Lake Texoma. That may not be a bad thing since Texoma is usually looks like chocolate milk. RED chocolate milk

Here in Central Florida we have:

Tilapia

Plecostomus (armored suckermouth catfish)

A little further south there are lots of snakeheads, convict cichlids, midas cichlids and others. South Florida also has Peacock Bass (intentionally introduced as game fish). I will get down there and hunt some up one day!

After my successful hitchiking trip to Orlando with the kayak, Im considering making Miami and its peacock bass my spring break destination. It seems like a different continent there, they have so many different things you can catch.

Joe I bet you have if you've looked in more than a couple of freshwater aquariums......much much smaller and commonly just called algae eaters. It's one of those fish that will only get as big as their enclosure will allow.

Ok, yeah you're right, I think I have seen them before. They were just way smaller. They look prehistoric at a larger size.

After the last hard freeze in Central Florida I saw hundreds of thousands of dead tilapia and plecostomus floating in bends of the St Johns River and its tributaries. Thankfully, no snakeheads.

South Florida has lots of fishing opportunities, both saltwater and fresh. There is great bass fishing in the Everglades, but there are also huge pythons slithering around. The peacock bass are great, especially since they are most active at midday. You can fish for largemouth in the morning, peacock bass once the sun gets high and finish up with seatrout and redfish by sunset. It's the two legged varmints that keep me a bit farther north.

Mirror, common and buffalo carp and tilapia are non natives to my neck of the woods, but let´s look at it with other eyes, tilapias are so abundant and eager to reproduce that they make the largest percentage of food intake for bass, and if it weren´t for them I´m pretty shure that bass wouldn´t grow so large and so fast down here.

Tilapia are good for a fishery on lots of levels, hard to find a downside.

Just stay away from South Beach, young man - or you may catch something you really don't want.

I saw one just about that size in one of the phosphate pits we fished around Lakeland, last January. I also have one, not that large or coloration in my aquarium. I was a little surprised to see it in Florida, don't know why because they have a lot of introduced species there.

That's about the worst nightmare in water I've seen other
