Zippin Ziggy first and always best. Rico second, Splash-it II and then jointed jitterbug..
I worked the devils horse and got many bites but lost a lot of fish also from the small hooks. Put bigger ones on it and it would not work right.. still experimenting with hooks on it. But the one lure that was killer for so long was the Krazy Krawler in a mid size. Hard to find these days. Capt Mike

2 biggest bass I ever caught were topwater bites.
One was on a Hula Popper the other was on a POP R type bait. |

Hey muddy let us know how those slammers work. Capt I have an old krazy krawler that I might just breakout and try this year. What time of the day would you use it?

Capt, those Ricos worth the high price tag? I've look at them. Killer colors, but I can't get myself to pay that much for a popper.
Buzzbaits are probably my favorite topwater, but I'm definately going to give frogs a better try this year. BB

X2 on that one.. i'm gonna try getting out more this year, and i intend on frogging some this year over popping. poppings always proved to produce with me, so i'm gonna start out with stuff that i've had trouble with in the past, then go from there.

Mine is a buzz bait but i don't like the booyah b/c i fish the pads alot and the arm doesn't come out far enough to keep me from hooking them often.....cabela's and wally world make good cheap buzz baits...but the wally world ones will break after a couple of weeks of heavy use.

basstastic, i've never broken a wallmart buzzbait.. i've acutally re-shaped the wires on both making opposite baits.. a buzz from a spinner and vice versa..
it didnt exactly work, but it made a cool looking bait and worked.

Caught my 10 lber on a wal-mart one dollar buzz bait. Was pulling it slow just under the surface one evening last May just before heading home when my world changed.

Opposite of me. I'll still be throwing Frogs a lot, but I'm gonna give buzzbaits a go this year.

Yes the Rico is worth it. So is the Splash-it II.
No mono just 30lb braid and a surgeons loop. I likes mine to come back to da boat... Let me add the Krazy Krawler works best when jitterbugs work.. low light or no light. Capt Mike

I had good luck last year fishing buzz frogs. I've used the Ribbits, Horny Toads and the Rage toads and shads. I fish a lot of places that get mucky and grown up with pads. The buzz frogs are for the most part weedless so they work pretty well. Early in the morning and just before sunset. Also the Rage Shads seem to work better when the water is a little choppy, they make more of a commotion.
Before I started fishing frogs my go to top water baits were the Spook and Spook jr. |

My favorite - Lunker Lure Buzzbait in black. I like sweaky, and hate clackers.
Although, I really love Spooks and Iovino Splash Its. Depends on whether I'm fishing points in open water or pockets. I prefer Spooks when targeting Smallies. Been fishing Splash Its for about 10 years, and can't tell you how many big largemouths I've caught on it. King Shad is my favorite color. |

Frogs and buzzbaits are my favorite baits to catch fish on, without a doubt! Thats why I'd rather topwater fish for bass than any other method or fish.
Sometimes I stay out late or head out early just to toss large, black Jitterbugs in the dark for an hour or two. I wear shop glasses because fishing a treble-hooked lure in the dark is asking for trouble. I had a spook come back at me last year while nightfishing and it split my lip, but I didn't get hooked. |

heh I have lost a few of those to some big pigs... I know next chance I get I will be picking a few more up from wally world. With all the vegetation and dark bottoms, I stick with the dark green and browns in my area |

This year I will be buying some of those cheap Cabela's and wally-world buzzbaits and drilling holes in the blades to create more surface disturbance. Im not to keen on drilling hole in 6 or 7 dollar buzzbaits

I run the gamut-Pop-R's, Heddon Tiny torpedos, Swimmin' Image, Popin' Image, Sammys, and the ever popular spooks and buzzbaits.

Will do, I have never paid so much for baits, I got 2. The lake is frozen so I dont want to use them just yet, might scape the paint off I have used black Jitterbugs,at hignoon , on sunny days and they work just as good as night sometimes, Depends on the day. I will probablly try them out at first when I can see them, to see how they react to various retrieve speeds and rod twitchs, Once you see that you can tell by feel what the bait is doing, then I will fish em in the dead of night also,. |

I tried a bait last year called the "Yellow Magic". It is like a hybrid between a Pop'r and a "walk the dog" bait. It is a little pricey for me at $15, but it was a productive bait for me. But I usually always start off with a spook, devil's horse, or a buzz bait. If your heart doesn't thump on either an explosion or a suck down and a swirl, you might be in the wrong business. Because there is nothing like it.

Ah I remember my first 5lb fish like it was yesterday. Hula Popp'r in my pond when I was around 10 years old. Right in the middle of some bushes. Nothing like that feeling, seeing what you just know is a stick of dynamite blow up on your bait.
Enough reminiscing, my favorite topwater lure is a custom-made black buzzbait. I fish a mean spook also. By far fishing topwater is the most fun you can have fishing for bass.

It's gotta be the pop-r. Early morning preferably, but if you can find shade its good, too.
