New at Fishing! Help!!
Hello! I am new to fishing and have actually caught a small red eye but too small to keep! However it made me love the art of fishing..,.
My question is to all the "seasoned" fishermen and women out there, Any tips for a newbie? I live near the new river and bank fish as I do not own a boat (yet),, I know we have catfish, redeyes, small mouth bass, and muskies that i know of.. I bought a new pole, have several jigs, etc, but not sure how to use them!! Thanks so much! |

Hey welcome to the site first of all , you got one of the greatest collections of anglers here and most likely some of the nicest people you can talk to as well . The search button at the top of the page is one of your best friends and check out Kevins videos on the main page as well . And don't be shy about asking specific questions there is always someone around to answer them
Jim

welcome to the site as Jim said tons of great people and info here. I fished from the shore for 16 years before i got a boat this pass spring. In my time on land i found the the best time to fish for me was right before the suns comes up till about 840 or later in the evening at dusk till around 9 in the summer. I have had tons of luck using Yum dingers 7 inch pumpkin/Chartruse i fish them wackey style which means you hook them threw the center of the belly so both side fail evenly. Try them out good luck on the water. If you dont know ask away tons of great people here that are willing to help

Yup! Ya done came to the right place man! Welcome to the forum!
I don't fish from a boat either, so you don't need a boat to catch fish! Helps though! First off, what kinda combo ya got? I'd invest in a decent spinning combo to start yourself out with. If you've got a Gander Mt. neat you than they have an excellent deal on a (Gander Mt. brand) Creek Side rod (30 bucks), when you buy that, you get a free Michel Tanger spinning reel. If you don't have a Gander near you, PM me, or I'll PM you (I don't wanna run up a lot of space hear on something kinda off topic). Regardless, get some 12lb p-line CX for it. As far as what kinda lure you should get. I defiantly agree with Joe! Git you some 5" yum dingers, and some 3/0 EWG hooks (I recommend Gammikatsu, or BPS brand) for texas rigging 'em. Than get some some 1/0 Gamakatsu Finesse Wide Gap Hooks and wacky rig them like Joe showed you, or if you can't get any o rings, than just hook them through the middle. PM me or I'll me you for some good info on fishing senkos (generic name for dingers and the like)! That should start you off good for now, just ask if you want some help on any specific lure, or something. Hope this helps! Hope you slay 'em!

Welcome to the site Dawn. As you can see, lots of folks here are happy to lend any info they can to help. My advice for a new beginner in fishing is to keep it simple. Don't do as some do and go out and purchase a slew of different types of lures and take for the water. It takes time to learn how each type of lure works, and when the best time is to use it. Frustration and failure usually follows when a newbie takes too big a bite at the start. I'd say get yourself a couple spinnerbaits, white with gold blades is always good. And as mentioned above, a few plastic stick type worms like the Yum Dinger and learn how to use those baits. One or the other should always be catching something. Take advantage of the internet! There is plenty of info avail.Youtube has videos on virtually any aspect of fishing you can imagine. And Kevin here who runs this site has very good videos as well. You mentioned you have a few jigs. Be sure to watch Kevins how to videos on jig fishing. Very good stuff. And lastly, practice your casting skills as often as you can. Putting the lure where you want it as quietly as you can is the first step to catching a fish. If you can't hit your target then everything else will suffer. Good luck!

Welcome to the forum!
You have stumbled on the best collection of bass addicts and tackle junkies there is, so jump right in and make yourself at home. There are 2 rules a new fisherman needs to remember on this site: 1. There are no stupid questions. 2. See rule #1. So ask away! The more specific info about where you fish/type lures you use/etc. the better. That will allow us to be more specific, but regardless if you have a question ask. You will find bass fishermen like talking about it almost as much as actually fishing. Almost.
