cracked lower unit on a used boat
Just a curious question for the group. If you were looking to buy a used boat and noticed that the lower unit was cracked (3 inches) because the previous owner let it freeze without winterizing it, what would you do? Would you still be interested in the boat or run from it and keep shopping? My gut tells me to keep shopping. I wanted to know your thoughts.
By the way, the boat is 1998 Ranger R61 sport and the motor is a 90 horse evinrude. |

EVERETT,
It will cost arount $1200+ to repair the lower unit complete. You be the judge. If you can buy it cheap enough to have the lower unit replaced and still be a bargain, it might be a way to go. On the other hand, if the lower unit froze, chances are the bilge pump and livewell pumps froze also. I would be very leary of buying a boat that the owner did not take better care of. (Just my $.02) JackL

Yep-that could be a real headache for you. I'd keep shopping unless you and work out a deal where the price will be reduced by the cost of the repairs, and even then I'd be cautious.

Definitely shop around, Rangers aren't hard to find. You can get a good Ranger thats had no problems for a good price.
Forget about this boat. Not only could you have problems down the road, some could show up before your ready. Like a week maybe ?

If a cracked lower unit is any indication of how well this owner takes care of his boat - KEEP SHOPPING.
