Swimbaits
I got some mattlures bluegills recently and was wondering what were everyone's opinion on the right time to throw big swimbaits. I know Im probably not going to get numbers with this but is there a special situation for them (like spinnerbaits and wind OR senkos and cold fronts)?

when you are looking for that big bass it is good to throw. i think its best to throw them and bump them off trees then reel really fast like it is trying to get away. when your looking for that big bass you should reel it slow no matter where you throw it but turn up the speed at the right times to make it look like its trying to escape.

Adam, that is one bait I don't have much experience with. Keep us posted on how you do-I'd be interested in knowing.

Don't own one, but from all the posts here, bed fishing with them is very good.

I threw some 5 inch swimbaits last friday and can see the way they stand on thier nose when you stop reeling, it could be the ticket if you find a bed. Other than that they reminded me of grub fishing, not much resistance when you reel it it.....I think most of the time I will reel a few
feet and then let it settle back to the bottom. |

As long as the water is in liquid form anytime is a good time to cast a swimbait.

This is one of the best times of the year to throw a swimbait, especially a mattlure bluegill. Ask yourself one question....what are the fish doing right now????? They are either in pre-spawn or spawn mod!! If pre-spawn they are looking to fatten up before they go on the bed, so bluegill is one of the main food supplies, if they are on the bed, ask youself......what is the biggest emeny to a bass' nest??? Bluegill. So to answer you question throw it NOW!!!!

Unless you live in the north east and are looking outside to SNOW a few inches deep and more on the way... when just a few weeks ago I was outside in a T shirt and it was 70 degrees.

That is a good question. I have wanted to throw swimbaits, but I am never sure when is a good time. Most of the largemouth bass have already spawned down here.

Okuma manufactures a very good cheap swimbait rod, you can get it at Tacklewarehouse for less than 100 bucks and free shipping.

Bob depends on how big of swimbait you want to throw. Small baits up to say 6 inches and less then 2oz you can get by with a flippin stick. For those bigger bait like 3oz and up, Lamiglas makes about the best swimbait rod there is. It's 8 feet long, large handle so you can use both hand to throw, notice I said throw, you don't cast a swimbait!! They run around $150.
