Default Fall Fishing?????

Left my 6th graders with a substitute teacher and took Dad fishing yesterday... The bite has not picked up the way I would expect this time of year.

My older, wiser Dad says it's because it's "Calendar Fall" but not weather fall , meaning that it hasn't gotten cool yet here, there are still a lot of bugs, and the water hasn't cooled significantly. It sounds good to me. Anybody else experiencing this? Or am I just a lousy fisherman who can't catch the fall bass.

We caught to small (2lb) bass and I caught another nice Northern Pike.

The bass seem to be tight to cover and lazy right now in my area.I went for 2 hours after work and boated 7 largemouth on a 3/8 oz. jig and a shortened Gene Larew craw trailer. The key is a good set of glasses to see anything different in the bare bank section. I found that the contour breaks off sharply for about a foot , or so then goes back to the normal gradual slope grade.I pulled 3 nice fish off from a short peice of wood laying on the breakoff.I had to saturate the breakoff area with real slow multiple pitch presentations before the fish would finally take it.The jig would sit for 20-30 seconds sometimes before the fish would grab it and swim off.I am not sure where in NY your at, I am in western NY are on the fingerlakes. I hope this helps.

The water has cooled a little more than that. I've been catching the majority of my bass on a floating Rat-L-Trap. My dad has also caught a few on a bluegill colored Bandit 100 Series crank. We haven't been out ot any of the reserviors we normally fish, but our pond and a couple other small ponds.

We've still got 68-70 degree water temps. Fished a local pond this weekend and caught 8-10 small bass on creature baits in 8-12'. Only one was over 12" and broke off another. Plenty of fish but no size in this pond. Out of the 40 total caught that morning, two other boats fished, only 5 were over 12".
I'll be on the Potomac this weekend and will post if we do anything worth talking about.
