red flake

What opinions do ya'll have regarding red flake in plastics, especially GP/watermelon-type colors. I never thought it made that much of a difference until recently when I couldn't buy a bite with anything other than a plastic with red flake.

When I use horny toads it's the most producing for me. I wish I could find a hollow body frog in that color. Your experience the other day, does it always end up like that? Or is it a one time thing? For me on the particular lake I fish I've tried multiple colors but always the red/watermelom always works best.

It has been said that red can be seen better by fish!
However, It is a myth that fish can see red better than any other color... I know this because I heard this on a show before...I cant remember which one. It could be that the sun may have reflected light and flash off of those red flakes at that given time.

In using watermelon/red zoom speedworm bodies {minus tails} for slow falling and deadsticking presentations, I've noted many times it works better than any other color or color combinations zoom offers in the speedworm line. Since I'm using them weightless in 15 feet or less, the red is still effectively holding its own color on the drop and bottom.

Mac, why don't youjust use Dingers or Tiki Stiks or Senko's? Why take the time to cut the tails off?

And I don't know about red flake, but if fish are keying in on a certain color, and if that color is red, then the red flake is going to help you. That's why some of the newer worms have 3 different colors in them (I know the Power Worms have these). Still, my most productive color has been Watermelon Candy.

Red or purple.........It dont matter to me. Every bait that I have or did have had a certain amount of red or purple in it for the most part. As far as plastics watermelon candy is #1 on my list bar nne followed by watermelon/red and then a couple other coos. Cranks have red on the gills and spinners I run red trailer hooks. Its a proven fact in my book it matters. As far as a bass seeing red better I dont know but here is my take on red and bass..........

Maybe red filters out of the water in the color spectrum but I am here to tell ya when the craws are red colored you can bet your bottom dollar the bass are on the prowl and biting anything that moves with red in it and I aint no scientist.

I've noticed that the red flake really jumps out once it gets in the water. Out of the water, I can barely see the red flake when it's in something natural colored, say punkinseed or something. But as soon as it hits the water, it looks like it catches fire. That makes me think it's a little more visible to the fish. Fact, I dunno, but that's my theory, anyway.

Thanks, guys. We're on the same page. I was just curious about other folk's experiences.
Bassinbob- I've had one other time when a certain color AND bait was the only thing working at the moment. The odd thing about the trip I was writing about was that I caught fish on Baby Brushhogs, Finesse, Centipedes, and Trickworms but only the ones that had red flake. I think it was probably something I was doing to cause that result.

I can't find a lot of baits this color, but I've had some good luck dropshotting Green pumpkin purple flake finesse worm earlier this year.

Zook- I couldn't agree more about smoke color in winter. Last winter was the first time I committed myself to fishing cold water and it really paid off. Maybe not with the number of fish, but the quality made it worthwhile. The smoke color worked best by far whether it was lizards, craws, worms, etc. I'm going to Gander Mnt. today and see if I can't find a pack of smoke/red/purple baby pacas- stock up for the cold water season. Thanks!

I believe red disappears first and blue is last. Once you get down to the deep water everything turns black to the fish.
I have some plastics with red flake mixed in. Just bought some 10" GP/Red worms. I don't think it makes a huge difference.
The melon/red toad put the 4+ in the boat last weekend. Caught fish on GP toad and my friend caught them on white too. I don't think color was all that important.

i like the red flake....but so far the bass don't, hahahaha. got some worms with it in and it works some if it is a blue worm with red flakes. other than that nuthin. have a box of just red to rusty worms and ain't had much luck with em yet. not for about 20 yrs. but i still try, lmao.

Last time we fished with Buzzie, I got most of my bites pitching a Rage Tail craw in Watermelon red flake. that and the watermelon chartreuse legged Horny toad.

Didn't miss anything today though, 144/ I caught one warmouth pitchin' a Sweet Beaver! I did see me a Champion out on Bird though...

Watermelon red flake is one of those colors you should never hit the water without, along with watermelon and green pumpkin. All 3 just flat catch fish.

Back when I was a kid I used to kill em on a Smoke/Red Flake Mann's Augertail worm. Especially in the Spring time. I don't know if they even make those worms anymore??? That was 20+ years ago!!!

What does smoke colored look like? What brand has a smoke/red flake lure out now?

It is kind of a translucent grey. I know YUM does, but I don't know about any others. It seems to be a pretty popular color in grubs and such.

I have not thrown much with red flake this year, but we hear that some days that is what triggers the bite vs. the same color without the red. A version of smoke has been our best seller this year, it is smoke with small gold, small black, small gold, and medium purple flake in it called KLB. I bet it has sold 5:1 over all other colors this year for us and has a few tournament wins to its credit.

I'm about to go get the YUM Dinger in a watermelon red flake color after hearing all of the success with it. what size should i get my worm? I don't use worms often so dont know that much. The sizes are 4" 5" 6" and 7"
