I see some pretty good opinions on the why, but as to marketing, regardless to how well it is or has been done, cannot and does not answer or explain that for my case, because of where I reside. I live in the neck of the woods where such marketing and hype of bass fishing bears little weight if any or "gravitas" as stupid politicians would say to sound smart, in this land where the reign of salmon and steelhead are supreme and where bass are but an after thought, and sometimes even a fish one might kill because it isn't a "native" species.

So for me at least, why I share the same sentiments as crankbait and many others simply transcends those reasons and is intangible to say the least.

I know I can't explain why myself. I have access to many fish that I can target that are larger and more powerful than our beloved bass, but yet, bass fishing is where my heart lies truly.

I hope I don't expend much more mental energy as to why, but perhaps just readily accept that the why is inexplicable and therefore just enjoy the fact that we choose bass just because.

I'm with island here, I've read all the post, and still haven't read one that explains this obsession...I just spent a week in the OBX, and spent all my time adapting bass fishing techniques to surf and pier fishing(only minor success). I love hunting Musky, but do I spend all my spare time reading about it, equiping myself for it, doing it...No. It's all bass, and all for that next "Personal Best", the big one that is lurking somewhere...but like someone said, maybe the real answer is in nofear's tag...and most of us have yet to figure it out.
