Default Salt Water Rig for Bass Fishin

Now that I have salt water fever, I have been thinking bout gettin my own combo that I can take down there for fishin the bays. But seein as I will only be doin that a few times a year, and I have been lookin for a crankin rod anyway I thought about gettin an inshore reel with a 7' M rod to fish both crankbaits and do wade fishing when i get down that way again...

So I been reading reviews on BPS' inshore stuff and they have really good reviews... so i been lookin at this combo...

What do you guys think? I would realy like a REVO inshore on a St Croix Tideater, but i gotta keep this relatively cheap...

IMO if you're going to be bassin more, than it would be better to get a bassin' rig that can be used in salt as well.

seems to me the only difference in a bass reel and a "bay" reel is the materials used in the parts (stainless steel and brass in the saltwater)... but aside from that they weigh the same, have the same type bearings, gear ratios, line retrieval rates... pretty much they are identical in performance, only the saltwater will hold up better in saltwater... so why would buying a bass reel be better??? im just curious... only thing i can figure is maybe a get a little more reel for the money if i buy a bass reel... i dunno...

i just know we used a good ole fashioned freshwater 5600 as reels this last week and they cast like crap... my wifes uncle stood next to me with his curado 200e and outcast me 2:1...

walker, I kind of agree with bassboss on this one. As long as you take care of your reel, it doesn't matter if it's built for fresh or salt water, it should work fine and last (except Magnesium reels. I wouldn't use them in salt, even the ones approved for it).

However, if you want a saltwater reel, check out the Daiwa Coastal Inshore Special, or the Revo Inshore.

Otherwise, get another of your favorite bass reels. Rinse in freshwater after each use, and it should be fine.

For saltwater, my first choice in reels (and what I use), is the older Shimano Curado Bantam CU200. A good one is not real easy to find, people tend to hang on to them, but they're out there. I rebuilt this one when it had been totally abused, in saltwater,by it's previous owner. Now, it's all I use for saltwater & she's as smooth as any of my freshwater reels. My second choice would be the Shimano Citica 200E. I prefer this over the Curado 200E because it doesn't have those goofy handle paddle bearings which usually freeze up PDQ around saltwater. I do not have any strong feelings about a rod choice, but I do not use any of my Falcons in saltwater. I have friends who do, & they're perfectly happy with them. I usually buy a new, less expensive, rod every year for saltwater (sometimes Santa brings one).

No hard feelings on the Shimano reels stance. I know that common sense will prevail. Get on down here & let's go to Choke!

I have started using my calcutta for both. I know they are on the heavy side, but the line capacity is a big thing for both my swimbaits and my trips into the salt.

I believe it is listed when a seal opens. Something about a pale horse and agreeing with BassBoss.

There at POC too, just not as thick. General rule is the more south you go the thicker they are. Sure are a blast!

I just may be... But wait, there's more! If you order right now, I'll agree with the next two quotes as well!

I'm also not a big Shimano fan, but don't worry, those Shimano fans can't throw hard.

While I'm more of a Daiwa guy, I gotta say Shimano does make some nice sticks.

That's why we own Shimano reels. Further casts with less effort.

Daiwa reels Shimano rods . Now there's a combination for the garbage can . Well...Now that Shimano owns GLoomis maybe we'll see some improvement in their rods.

I'd say if over 10 years wasn't enough time to improve, you'll never like shimano rods. Shimano bought G Loomis back in the mid 90s.

Shimano rods are hard to beat in their price ranges, from the Compre, to the Cumara.

Yeah, it's been a while since the purchase, I was just having a little fun. They're actually pretty good rods. Great rods, if you ask my oldest son (they're his favorite). But now that trashy Daiwa...that's another story.

If you do use your freshwater reel(s), make sure you rinse them off with clean freshwater as soon as possible after the last reel in. Salt can chew up these reels very quickly, I see it all the time in my area.

For saltwater use I like the round reels over the low profile. One thing you want is a good drag system, saltwater fish will burn up a lot of freshwater "bass" reels. The newer Abu REVO and Pflueger Partriach's have a drag rated around 20# which should handle most inshore salt, and the Patriarch also has a titanium coating which should help with the corrosion issue but you'll still want to rinse them well & lube the level wind after exposure to saltwater. But I'd still recommend a round reel which will also serve well for fresh water, for the bigger/heavier drag.
