Default Topwater

Hello again, Guys. I have a few questions on topwater that need answering, so I came to the "Pro's".

>What lures would you reccommend for basic topwater, except frogs?
>What are some popular colors, except frogs, used for topwater?
>What action/power rod are most topwater, except frogs, used on?
>What companies, except frogs, make good and durable topwater?

I'm looking for five to ten lures in the five to six dollar range; no more than fifty dollars total. I want a variety, not just poppers and buzzbaits. I have two Jitterbugs, and one Strike King Spit-N-King, just so you know what I don't need.

1. Buzzbaits are something we use here a lot. Had good luck with 'em this year too. Also Cigar-style baits like skitter walks, spooks, jimmy's etc.

2. for buzzbaits we have good luck on chartreuse, chartreuse/white, and Booyah's Limetreuse. As for The Cigar baits: redhead, black, silver.

3.X-fast action. As for power, I'd think M - MH would be good. I am looking at both powers for my topwater rod. also, go with a shorter rod, 6'6" max.

BOOYAH for buzzbaits, along with Strike King. As for the other, XCalibur (although it may be a bit pricey), Rapala, Heddon, and Lucky Craft ( which is also pricey).

Hope this Helps.

i use alot of prop baits,skitter prop,tiny torpedo,spooks.
the action and legth of rod is going to be decided by the size and weight of the lure.the spook comes in like three sizes,so the 1 size fit's all won't work.also some might consider a minnow bait also topwater, depending on how it's used.work's great around fallen logs and along edges of weeds.

Floating Rapala's are another good lure for us. We mostly use the silver black back, and the Chatreuse. We work them over shallow weedbeds and stuff. They work pretty good.

I won a tournament on a floating Rapala J-11 in Blue/White. Nothin' like $100, a trophy, and braggin' rights!

Yeah. I've never been in a bass tourney. I'd be fun though. A friend of ours fishes tourneys and He could take me if I wanted to. I'm not that great at bass fishing though. I'd lose big time. Maybe in a couple years.

LL, I forgot, Heddon's got a new version of the spook. (well atleast I think it's new). The Sway-Back spook. It's supposed ot walk a lot easier than Zara's. It's got some pretty nice colors too. I'd check 'em out. I can't remember if I say them on BPS or Cabela's website though.

I'll get a link and post it.

I've been looking at that swayback model too. It would be great to get some opinions on it.

Yeah i won one here in Raytown MO on wild wood lake. Using a white 4 blade buzz bait. I caught a 5 gallon bucket of bass. The lake was a private lake that was over populated with way to many bass. Average size bass was 9 inches. So they opened up a tournament to the public to clean up the problem. I ended up with a Applebee's gift card. Hey it feed the whole famly. Plus i took 97 bass. I still use no other atractant but garlic Bang. For that very reason

That's cool. I wish there were places around here that I could catch 97 bass, even if they were 9"

i would recommend you get a spook in white, black, or a natural baitfish color. it is a great replication a an injured baitfish and the fish love to blow up on em. If you do get one make sure and wait a second to set the hook because sometimes they will blow up on it but it will still be floating there when the fish goes back down. just wait until you feel him on the line.

a spook is great, so is a spit n image if you can find them. sammy's are good but pricey. but i don't think topwater gets much more simple than a chug bug or popr. on all of the above i like greys, silvers and whites for most conditions. in a buzzbait i like whites and blacks mostly.
