bedding bass
I have never fished for bedding bass. I am fishing with a friend this summer in Michigan and he told me the bass would be on the bed. Are there any tips or tricks to catching bedding bass? Thanks

Also, if they are nervous, try backing way off and casting past the bed. You may not see the bite, so you'll have to feel for it.

If you can get out early enough and often enough, the prespawn bite is awesome...once you can focus in on a few yards from the bank, you'll see males and a few large females that are scouting out areas, and will bite!
After she sets on the nest, you're looking at hours of pestering her will baits that hit the nest..you'll probably get the male to bite first, better hold onto him before you get her to hit.. |

Welcome to the forum!
If they are on the beds you will most likely be sight fishing, so polarized sunglasses are mandatory-you need them to see the fish to cast to them. Bright lures are a good choice because you can see them and see if the fish takes them. I mainly use soft plastics-tubes, lizards, and craws-and jigs. You want something that resembles things that will try to eat the eggs, so anything that resembles a lizard, bluegill or crawfish is a good choice. They aren't actively feeding, but protecting the bed so you want to use something that will make them mad. You will probably have to make repeated casts in order to get them to hit.

you need tubes, lizards and jigs.any of these on a flipping/pitching rod will set you up for a great time.

I love fishing a Rattle trap on the breaks of the spawning flats.Let the trap reach bottom and then lift your rod tip to move the trap and let it fall back to the bottom. Retreive it like that coming from the flat down off the ledge to deeper water. This is where your bigger females will be while the little buck bass will be on the nest guarding it.Watch your line, you will hardly notice the bass hit it sometimes and then other times they really pounce on it . chef, where in Michigan are you going to be fishing? Last year I missed the spawn, never in town long enough to get out. This year I plan to get out there a lot more.

Can you fish these beds from shore since they spawn near shore?

i hate bed fishing. not something i want to do or like doing but i can do it.i use a spinning rod and a tiny bush hog on a shakey head.. just got to find the sweet spot.-this is the spot the bass will readily remove any thing in the nest.. the trick is when he moves something as small as a tiny bush hog with a long shank hook like a shakey head. to set the hook.. please note this is not an easy thing to mess with a bass for 30-45 mintues to get them to bite..
not all bass spawn at once. i rather look on the first outside drop off for a staging female bass.. zooker

i leave those 30-45 minute fish alone and hunt for the ones that will blast a jig the second it comes in the water.

Also, when looking for spawners, look for rocky banks not sandy ones. The rocks tend to hold more heat and they're bed will stay made. Rarely do I see a bed on a sandy bank.
Lures: I drop shot the majority of the time I bed fish. It allows you to keep the bait in the bed and still give action to it. Tx-rigged craws, lizards and any other creature baits work good in beds as well as jigs. However, be prepared to spend some time fishing for spawning fish. Some will bite immediately, and some will take some time. Also, please practice catch and release especially with spawning fish, otherwise you won't be bass fishing for long Hope this helps and welcome to the forum!!! Jolly

try weightless t-rigged super flukes. They are my best bed lure, and my bass attack it 80% of the time right away.

I don't know anything about Burt or Mullet but you might want to ask around http://www.greatlakesbass.com/forum/index.php for some local info. I know that there is a tourny up there every year and the guys on there fish it.

2 rattle trap brands worth mentioning are the Spro Aruku shad and Luhr Jensen Sugar shad. Both will sit upright on the bottom instead of falling over on their side.Might be something to sit in a bed and move boat off on slack line and wait to see what removes it. Like Zooker, I anit big on bedded bass, but I might see what happens this spring with the trap. P N J
