Default Rod preferences for throwin' cranks

When throwing cranks, specifically, mid-range cranks such as the DT 4 and DT 6, does it really matter if I use a "crankin' stick" versus a regular bass pro baitcasting rod?

Also, what is everyone's rod preference for throwing mid-range cranks?

Depends on the rod. I use 2: For lipless and shallow/medium runners I use an 6-6 AllStar GT2 and for big deep runners I use a 7' Falcon Low Rider crankbait rod. Both are medium action composite rods-graphite butt section with a glass tip.

Really, though, it is the action of the rod that is the most important thing IMO. If it has treble hooks I throw it on a medium action rod. The reason is a medium action rod, especially with a glass tip, has more give to it so there is less chance of a fish pulling the hooks out as it pulls back.

I agree with using a medium action rod for the reason already stated. I use a 6'6" medium rod.

Here's a link to my current crankin rod 6'6"

My next one will be a 7' Legend series crankbait rod Now for deep divers I prefer a MH rod.

deends on the crank really imo. shallow divers that go down less than 10 feet-inculding lipless baits-7 foot medium action fenwick gt. i have a torno on this rod loaded with 8 pound pink ande mono.
big cranks dt's-10,14,16 poes 300,400 manns 20+,30+ norman dd10, dd22 ect.. mh action rod minimum 7 foot prefure 7'6''-8'3'' i have a 7'6'' david fritts american rodsmith. which i have a 4.1 geared team diawa-actually a drop shot reel-loaded with 8 pound pink ande mono..

the reason for the lenth is to get the crank as big as a dt-16 to work to it's full potental you must throw it a long way..to get it down in the sweet spot..

Seems like the consensus is for medium action rods 6'6" and some prefer the glass crankin sticks over the graphite.

Decisions, decisions, decisions . . . I am certain that my next rod and reel will be a baitcaster for cranks. I still must decide whether to go with the glass versus the graphite and if I will get the medium versus the medium heavy.

For deep cranking I like to use an old Kunan 7' Med action glass rod.

I use a BASS PRO cheapo 30 doller graphite rod....in 7 foot med action...it is a awesome crankbait rod...sensative enought and it loads up on the fish....I recomend it as long as you are not throwing tiny balsa cranks....anything else it does the job!

i hate glass rods.no way will you feel more vibration.i use a 6-8 all star im10x spinnerbait rod with deep divers and a 6-6 johnny morris signature series m-h with lipless cranks.both rods use sufix braid.both have soft tips to absorb shock.i loosen the drag and hardly ever loose fish.so far i haven't lost any this year.i feel everything with these setups.as soon as the vibration stops you stop reeling and wait for the mouth to close and set the hook 1 time.just don't horse them in and you won't loose them.

The only problem that (I've) found is that a glass rod is harder to throw. Sometimes you basically have to "lob" the bait vs. using a regular cast like with graphite. The sensitivety is not there as it is with a graphite rod therefore it's hard to feel what your bait is doing.
I've got both but the glass rod is better for deep crankin.
(in my opinion)

I use a 6 1/2 foot med. action graphite rod from Gander Mountain. An IM7 Guide series. I couple that with a Garcia 4600C3 casting reel. Works great for me. I like the lightness of the rod for working cranks for hours. And it has just the right flexabilty to set the hooks without tearing them out. A good fiberglass rod should be ok. I feel a good graphite blank really comes into it's own when fishing with worms, finess baits, carolina rigs, and other methods where a good sense of feel is critical.
