Crankbait depth question

I've always known that smaller diameter line allows cranks to dive deeper, but does anyone know how much of an affect it actually makes? If I throw the same crank on 10 lb. and 14 lb., how much of a difference would there be? Any info on this would be much appreciated.

maybe 2 to 3 feet.it doesn't sound like much but it can make a difference.then again sometimes you want to use thicker line and keep the bait up.

So do you think it would be safe to allow about a foot or so difference between each line size?

Probably so termie,
but keep in mind a few other variances to the equation, the water temp on any line can effect the depth, as well as where the angler holds the rod, for instance keeping the rod tip on a short cast up at 11 o'clock postion, will probably keep the lure much shallower than perhaps a long cast with the same lure and keeping the rod tip pointed towards the water. Your right in thinking that line diameter does make a dif. but also consider the techniques for bring that lure in and what you want it to do, i.e. hit bottom, or brush weed tops while ripping through, or banging into timber, or just as simple as a stop and go..

yup, the 7 ft range is probably prefered, or 6-6

1 ft per every pound of test. If the bait dives to 10 ft when tied to 12 lb test it will dive to 8 ft when tied to 14 lb test, the opposite is also true, the bait will dive deeper if you decrease the poundage of your line.

that only applied to mono, right, or atleast the mono diameter, like my spiderwire stealth is the dia. of 2lb. mono, it will go 8 ft deeper than 10 lb dia.?

yes,thin braid will make it go even deeper.

Dodgeguy is right, when using braided line do not pay attention to the poundage, 30 lb braid is pretty much 8 lb mono diameter, your bait will dive like if it was tied to 8 lb mono.

I'd think twice before putting a crankbait, or anything else with trebles, on braided line. You will most definitely have a hard time not pulling the trebles out of fish's mouth with no-stretch line. I love braid, but I never throw anything with trebles on the stuff cause it just doesn't give enough to allow a fish to stay on. But if you need to get a deep diver down 20+ feet, then braid is a good choice because you can throw it on 6 lb diameter and still have great strength. Just remember to loosen your drag and fight the fish softly.
