Palm your reel and run the line through your thumb and pointer finger, that way you will feel every little thing.

When trimming skirts, trim them irregularly. I hold mine up by the head and point the scissors upwards at a slight angle, thus cutting "V" notches out of the skirt, leaving some strands the original length, and the others gradually getting shorter toward the back of the hook. I know some advice would have you cut them all to the back bend of the hook, but by cutting the V shapes out, it gives a shaggier appearance and each strand has more freedom to move individually.
