Default How slow is too slow?

I was talking to a guy about two 5.0:1 reels I have. One is the Curado D and the other is the Citica D. Other than for crankbait fishing he suggested I use one on a spinnerbait rod. Reasoning that is would be too slow to flip with, too slow to take up the slack on a c-rig, and not fast enough for medium cranks. What do you think? Have you ever tried a 5.0:1 for s/b and what was the outcome?

carolina rig or cranking i like this gear ratio.. but here is the kicker gear ratio means jack squat.. what really counts is the line retrived pre 1 turn of the handle..i use a 7.1 or a 6.4 with my spinner bait..

i use quatum mag gears -5.1- reels for carolina rigging and for cranking.. the 310 mag gear-30 years old- pulls 18" of line pre full turn on the handle. the newer 1310 mag gear gets 22" of line in per revolution..

Not so, They will be fine to flip, or pitch with.If in doubt , use a longer rod tip, this will take up any slack , if the reel cannot keep up with it, but I doubt you would have any problem. P N J

everyone has a natural cadence of retrieve. You can slow or speed any reel retreive up by the speed you turn the reel handle. WHen flipping with a 7 1/2 foot rod in close quarters with the fish the reel speed is not of any great importance. Your reflexes are far faster than the reel. When fishing soft plastics the fish usually hold on the the bait far longer than you think so again the retreive ratio is not as important. You need to adjust your ratio by yiour natural cadence for the type presentation you are making. When cranking a deep diver you may want a slower reel but when burning a ratle trap or buzzbait you may want a faster reel.Fish2win

5 to 1 is good for slow rolling spinnerbaits.you can also flip with it.it doesn't take up as much line as quickly but it does give you more torque.

Times have changed. I remember back when 5:1 was the HIGH SPEED reel.

Same here.

I have a 4.4:1 that I use on a crankbait rod. I still have a couple 5.1:1 I use for spinnerbaits and cranks. For plastics and jigs I use 6.3:1.
