Boat Def: A floating hole you throw money into...

I've heard this a lot. Now I'm a newbie to boating only having gotten my boat last summer and had her in the water 16 times.
Now I have to say that initially outfitting her with everything needed: lines, bumpers, anchor, oar, safety gear....not to mention new tires for the trailer and battery for the TM added up, but since then, it's just been gas and oil.

So why does boating get the bad rap? Is it just because like fishing, there's always stuff one 'could' buy? (hmmm....like since that real scorcher of a day trip last summer I've been thinking of a bimini top)))

Because everytime you turn around, there is another needed expense... insurance, registration, trailer plates, replacement batteries, fixing torn seats, replacing burnt out bulbs for boat and trailer and so on...

In my case I have a camper which is my money pit. No need for 2.

Funny you should mention this subject, as I purchased some "start of the season" necessities for my boat not an hour ago:

Fuel Filter Replacement Tool ($6...nice)
New Air Filter ($11...not too bad)
New Fuel Filter ($36

)
Spare Alternator Belt ($44

)
3 new spark plugs ($45

)

And the DFI oil is going to run me about $32 per gallon. I plan on using about 5-6 gallons this year....maybe more.

As you can see, just basic upkeep of your boat will hit you pretty hard in the ol' wallet.

I agree, it is a never ending expense and if/when you have a need for service get ready to bend over. Service rates at my local dealer in Michigan were $110 or $120/hr and I think $200 for immediate service. The oil, gas, maintenance, etc. is not cheap.

Gas, I can not complain about. My 115 Opti is about the perfect size for fuel economy. It can push me at 45 mph, decent, yet gets amazing gas mileage when trolling around at idle. I usually only use 6-7 gallons of gas per day, and I usually fish around 12 hours.

Oh, let's say that you are on a fishing trip, in a neighboring state, and your trolling motor decides to quite working with 2 days of fishing remaining on your trip. Well, you can either pack it up and go home, or replace your worn out trolling motor with a shiny new one for $750. I can say this though, it was definitely money well spent.

I can relate to spinding that greenback stuff on our boat/trailer. My dealer runs me 90 an hour, plus parts, and they won't use after market brands either it's factory parts only, which cost me more. I was going to up-grade to all LED lights when rewiring the tailer, but that's another 100 for just the lights, (My trailer has two amber tongue light, one amber in front of each fender, one red light right behind each fender, two brake lights, and the motor bar light) But my trailer is 8 years old, and will most likely need replacing very soon. (I can't believe it's still holding up, from what I've read) So I've been thinking of going ahead and doing that before I have to. Well that's going to run me about 1500 for a nice galvanized trailer that I won't have to worry about for years to come. So yes they can be a big money pit, but hey, what fun would it be if they weren't, right? hahaha

I bought Mercury Premium Plus for $24.00 a gallon there. It's about $32 to $36 everywhere else I looked

Sometimes that is very true.. but the last one I sold had me all misty to see it get towed away.. I wanted to visit it and talk to it and find out if the new owner was good to it.. It was by far the best boat I have ever owned.. Damm alergys.. sniffle.
