Zachster, Yep, they are definitely a good lake lure. I regret that you've not been successful with them to date. I suggest you search various sites for info on techniques and applications for the basic types of toppies; Chuggers, Poppers, Prop baits, "Walkers" (I.E. Spook, Sammy, etc.) Frogs, and Buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzbaits. I start almost every trip with topwater, especially a Super Spook Jr, a Tiny Torpedo, Buzzbait, or Zoom Horny Toad. (Well, I'm a horny toad too, but this is a family forum so we'll let that pass for now.) I don't limit myself to morning and evening efforts with a topwater, hereafter referred to as a "TW" (my monitor is low on ink.) If fishing over weedbeds, for example, and most especially if it's overcast, I'll often throw a TW regardless of the time of day or season. There's nothing more exciting and satisfying than seeing even a small bass assault a TW. Even if you miss the hookup or lose it on the first jump it's wonderful. Da n monit r is unn ng o t of i k! Topwaters work well in any water, small pond, huge lake, whatever. They're generally not my first choice in cold water or sunny skies, but I don't rule them out either, as I've seen action on them when the book says subsurface lures should be better.

I like using jitterbugs around dusk or sunrise over calm water especially over gravel flats

Topwater lures are not only one of the most exciting lures to use they also produce in any water and more times than not the fish they produce are quality fish. A topwater appeals to the predator senses of a bass. In no way shape or form do they want that noisy flashy thing in there bedroom at that time of the morning or evening. And on those overcast days when they taking a nap they will explode on them. With jigs being my number one producer of bigger bass I would have to give second place to the topwater. The trick in what topwater to use is what conditions you are fishing in. Normally not always though a noisy topwater when the wind has a chop going on the water and a quieter one when the conditions are calmer. Like I said though this is not written in stone. I have on occasion say when its dead calm picked up a bussbait with a clacker and had them murder em. Do some experimenting and you will see.
