But the wind wasn't gonna allow us to get on the water without a battle, and our lightweight aluminum boat is just a real handfull in the wind so we didn't bother....Try again next week.

I made it out in the really high winds here last weekend and it wasn't a whole lot of fun fighting it all day and it didn't have the fish all fired up either. I have a drift sock but didn't use it since there were only a couple places that I wanted to actually drift through. I think that I should have used my anchor instead.

I've talked to several other guys about using them, but we have not purchased one at this point....I think the main thing holdin us back is that the two lakes we fish the most are full of underwater timber....One does have a bit of open water, but in most of the areas we fish, the sock would be getting hung up all the time.

I have used a drift sock and that helps a bunch. Yoiu can still use the trolling motor to steer with the sock depoyed. One idea I have thought about, but have not tried yet, is a drag weight. My thought on this is to get some of the old window weights at a junk store. Tie them to some cheap rope and just toss a couple out tied to the rear cleats on the boat. The wind will blow the boat, but the drag of the weights should slow it down considerably. The weights are shpaed like drop shot weights and should slide through some snaggy cover without getting hooked.

Understand what your sayin, however the sock does not sit deep in the water, actually it probably sits less deep than the bottom of the boat, if you can go over the timber in the boat, I don't think you would have that much problem with a sock.
