Default Fishing With Minnows

I am going to try using minnows to catch some fish at my local pond.

I want to bring a net with me and simply catch them from shore. The pond that I am fishing at ALWAYS has fish busting the surface eating/chasing minnows. There has never been a time that I have gone there and not seen a lot of activity on the surface on the minnows.

What type of hook is recommended for this? I would think I would have to resort to a small aberdeen style hook. How should I hook the minnow? Do I use a float?

I have never fished this way before, but I hope to try it out to see how well it works.

In the Spring, just after ice-out when the water is 35 to 40 degrees still, me and my buddies have found a minnow hooked through the lips(# 6 hook)about 18 inches below a float works well for some decent sized bass(we have caught 14" plus bass this way).We fish them very still and jiggle the bobber every now and then. We also have weighted them and fished them on the bottom. We fish them in shallow underwater trees and new weedbeds.

Numerous way's to hook shiners/minnows. Some hook them in the back just below the spine. This gives them normal swimming patterns. I prefer to hook mine through the mouth, usually from bottom to top and through one nostril. This will cause the fish to swim downwards. If fishing heavy pads, I hook through the back closer to the tail, from my experience the shiner will swim naturally towards the cover. With the line being farther back on the fish I still maintain tension and don't have as much line drag.

I always hook them either through the eyes or the mouth...ya have to be careful hooking onto the back, the minnow won't last as long. (just speaking of crappy fishing with minnies)
