Default Insane backlash... Won't come out

Ok, so yesterday it was so nice out I had to hit the pond. Well, i wen't with 3 friends, none of whom had gear. the results? a snapped rod, 2 completely tangled reels, a lost jerkbait, 2 lost worms along with hooks.

i honestly did better my first trip... Well We had a little competition but all got skunked. However, at the end while i was picking a tangle from the spinning rod, I let my other friend try the baitcaster... short cast. This is what happened.

I have tried for an horu to pick it, used forks, needles, toothpick, and the sewing things. None worked. What do i do?

when i get a backlash, I hold the line tight till i can see where its caught. Then pull the line where it is caught andthen tryreeling in again. works almost everytime for me.

Cranky, sometimes they require surgery, and that one looks like it might. You may have to cut it out and respool. Not a bad idea with mono-it gets seriously weakened when it gets a kink in it, and casting your favorite bait or fighting a fish is not the time to find out.

JB, excellent work, as usual.

However, I must recommend you pull this picture, and instead work on the one with the chunky kid in the shorts, he won't even look at the camera.

Put your thumb on the line firmly and try to reel. It might not reel more than and inch or two. In this case try it again, and again maybe several times. This works most of the times and eliminates most tangles that may occur.

Like someone said before, just start pulling the loops out, pull a bunch out, then start pulling the line out, usually works well. Oh, BTW, that isn't really that bad of backlash. LOL

well i got sick of pulling loops... there were just too many. I ended up cutting away. Debating on wheter i should respol, tie another line to the spool, or just use what I've got. The lops are weird... not sure how it happened but they actually went over and around the line... can't really explain it.

ROTFLMAO!... Cranky, let's see, your freinds have no equipment, so they obviously don't fish much. And you with your wonderful knowledge of how hard it was just to learn THE BASICS of a baitcaster You in your infinate wisdom allow someone who has probably never even heard of a Baitcaster "PLAY" with it, and you're wondering how it got so bad ROTFLMAO!!!!!. No offence but fishing isn't a contact sport, usually anyways. Broken rod DOH, lost baits, happens all the time get used to it. If you aren't used to losing baits then you aren't fishing in the right places! Next time you decide you want to take the boys fishing, then go buy some Zebco's from wallyword and go fishing, but obviously they aren't gonna take care of your equipment, so why let them use it, I hope this is a lesson learned. By the way it won't be the last time you have to "CUT IT OUT" I promise you.

cranky,
i noticed how much your new baitcaster is scratched up, you should get a cover or wrap a small towel around it when transporting it from the car to the pond....and keep the reel pointing up when in transport so no metal surface can scratch it..I've got 15 year old reels that don't have that many scratches

holy crap dude, im suprised to see that you dont have ice up there in New Jersy... We still have a litlle (2-3 inches) on most of the ponds, though the Sandusky Bay area of Lake Erie is clear of ice...

yup its the kid with the shorts and boots lol, i agree with lizzy aswell i wouldnt let any of my friends who dont fish much touch my baitcaster seein as how its hard enought just to learn. also i just melted some baits together and i saw on the package zoom "salty craws" they are salty, taste good too, no wonder the bass like them lol try it sometime

actually that is 10lb trilene XT, beleive it or not. I thought it was a tad thick too. Yeah this was a lesson hard learned... I figured he'd be able to make one short cast, showed him how. I didn't even mess up this bad on my first 20 casts!
JB- yes, I do need to look into some reel covers. I am useing a camera case teporarily

Friends don't lend friends their baitcasters . . .

Cranky, by the way, I can't believe that there isn't any ice. I got all geared up on Saturday and drove to a local lake (Struble). The entire lake was frozen without any openings whatsoever.
