I can see it from both sides. If a body of water is overpopulated harvesting fish is beneficial to that body of water, just don't fish it out. On the flip side, I'd rather catch them than clean and eat them. I think the best of both worlds is mentioned in that article Huck posted-transplant them. Granted, there are some potential problems with that, i.e. Largemouth Bass Virus, but I think the benefits outweigh the risks.

not to mention one of the nastier fish viruses to go around - almost wide spread in nc- gill maggots.. these parasites will kill younger fish..

Limits are established by the fisheries biologists, it depends exclusively on you if you want to execute them or not, if you want to release the fish fine, if you want to keep it as long as you follow the limits the lake will be fine and nobody can say you are wrong doing.
