Frog hooks

I recently picked up a pack of Tru-Tungsten Frog Hooks. My frog hook-up ratio's with regular EWG hooks aren't the best. Plus it is a coin flip as to whether or not the frog will swim right side up.

What hooks have you guys had success with while fishing Horny Toad type frogs?

I tried these hooks and I was not that impressed. I think the hooks are bit on the small side and require you to really stretch out the bait in order to hook it. Check out this hook http://www.fishfreakonline.com/stanl...takehooks.html It has a screw in nose and much larger hook. It fits great on a Ribbet. Highly recommended.

I don't fish frogs much, but when I do, I normally use an 5/0 Owner Twistlock. A lot of guys use 4/0 or 5/0 regular EWG hooks. Give the TT Frog Hooks a try and let us know how you like them.

Up till now I've always used a 5/0 EWG hook with fairly good results. But I to have trouble with the frog sometimes wanting to swim upside down. Then I saw some fellas on tv frog fishing with a weighted 5/0 swimbait hook. I believe it was either 1/8 or 1/4oz weighted hooks. The added weight in the belly kept the frog upright and they caught plenty of bass. So now I'm wondering what if the lure makers started producing swim frogs with hollow bodies just like the hollow body swimbaits that are so popular. I bet the hookup ratio would go way up!

Interesting idea Keith. If the frogs were made partially hollow it would offset the weight on the hook. I did notice when I bought these hooks they had another double frog hook with a screw lock that had some type of weight on the eye of the hook, not on the shank.

Here it is, Gambler Chris Lane Double Trouble Toad Hook.

After reading the reviews on the TT hooks I might should have gone with the Gambler's or the Stanley's. I think I'm gonna go pick up a variety and give them all a shot. Maybe I will find a winner in the bunch.

Tried out the TT Frog Hooks this morning. They are super hard to rig and aren't really big enough. I was using Yum toads. Once I finally got the toad on the hook it did swim well though. I think the screw lock design on frog hooks is the way to go.

Thumbs down on the TT frog hooks.

Zooker has caught 8,324,475 bass over 4lbs on the same 4/0 EWG Superline Gammy.

That hook should be in the Fishing Hall Of Fame! I bought the Gambler's. Haven't tried them yet but they might not fit different toads. They seem a little wide. Tried to hook up a Ribbit and the it was to narrow.

With the Gamblers, I don't see how the weight at the nose of the hook helps keep the bait from flipping over.

And what's wrong with the bait running upside down? It doesn't effect the action of the bait, and I'm pretty confident saying that when a bass hits a frog, it doesn't stay in the right side up position anyways.

That's funny!

As far as the frog running upside down, unless you're using a two tone frog it probably doesn't really matter. My main goal is better hookups.

I could see how they would decrees hook up, but I don't have any, so yer gonna have to conduct this little test of mine!

Take a frog, put it on regler (yes, regler) EWG hook, than take the TT hook rig it on. Once you do than, push on the bite of the frog (a 1/4" in-front of the hook point) with each hook on. Which is easier to push down on? Probably the single hook because it has more plastic to through. That's probably why yer not getting as good of hook sets.

But my favorite frog hook is Owner TwistLock Open Gap, and a Sizmic Toad Hook. I like the Sizmic toad hook over the horny toad hook because it has a bigger gap, for better hook ups.

Always 5/0
