Default First Ice Fishing

Hey, the ice is finally... well... not perfect for ice fishing, morelike just barely thick enough. 3-4" We went out on our pond anyways. With my new portable depth finderI got for Christmas, I found out that we were fishing 15'-almost 17'. My dad pulled up the first fish, a 3" bluegill. Stupid bait stealers... Then he got a small 8" bass. only a couple of inches girth though, very skinny. Following that I landed a 5" bluegill, and my dad got 3 more bass, all the same size. Not too too bad for the first time out.

Try the sweedish pimple & rapala ice jig on those bass. Try using 2lb line with a 1/32 jig tipped with meal worms. Your fishing odds will increase.

Just can't get into the icefishing thing myself, but I like to hear everybodys reports... Keep us posted, especially if you try something new. Good Luck!

I know i'm not hardcore about it. But it does help relieve some cabin feavor when the lakes are froze over. I'd rather fish this method then sit on my Duff.

LMC, I agree. And since I got my new winter coat and things, this has been the first time in my life my dad got cold before me! And about hte swedish pimple and rapala ice jigs, We would use them, but we are really after some perch. We know we have some nice sized perch in our pond, it's just getting them to bite. Last year we caught 3 10"+ perch. We'll keep trying.

We are going out again today when my dad gets home. We finally has a night cold enough to add more ice instead of just refreezing what melted during the day. I'll Keep ya posted on anythings we catch. Maybe pictures... probably not though.

Well, we went out for a brief while when my dad got home. The ice hasn't froze much more. We got a few bites, but no takers. They were probably bait-stealing little bluegill anyways. OH well, better luck next time I guess.

anybody else got some New Year Ice Fishing stories?

some swear right before sunset the gills eat, but for me its more like the middle of the day.
We usually will drill 5-6 holes an move around till we get hit. I fish alot of ti pits that bob up and down, they point down if you have a fish on. Then after you find the right area / depth, stick with it, many times those fish under ice will move around and come back like every 45 minutes or so. You can get a weighted alagater clip to put on your line to determine the depth, mark your line(ice fishing reels have pegs on the side to set the line depth.
Also if you just have one spoon to dig the ice chips out, I've seen guys those crackers on the top of the hole, the salt helps keep the top from skimming over.
consider taking a ladder or rope to the pond if some one falls in, it helps.
I use my old 10 john boat and slid it on the ice when its 4 inches or less, and set on it, instead of my ice fishing sled.
the sled holds a lantern, with a hole cut out of hands, and also some storage area. You just drag the sled behind you on the snow to the ice.
Then you have a place to sit, instead of getting bucket butt. for a cheap homemade butt seat,

You can take styrfoam and put it in a trashbag, and it will generate heat.
I opend a hot seat once and all it is .....is styrofoam beads. I've tried the packing noodles and they work.
Pink 1/16 tear drop jigs are what i use , sometimes white or chartruse, tipped
with wax worm
