Default 9.9 merc help needed

My 96 9.9 only hits 3000 rpm at WOT.Is this normal? It has hit 3200 rpm on occasion but it just seems like it's not running the way it should.I've read where other merc 9.9 run 5-6000 rpm WOT.Is this possible?
Thanks for the help.

The hub is fine.It just seems the motor is not running at peak, like it's holding back.Kinda like there's another click it should make to get into full throttle.Just not that smooth WOT feel.
I put a call in to Lazer but he has not gotten back to me yet.

Maybe a stupid question, but I'm assuming you have a tiller-control 9.9? With the throttle on the tiller? Have you tried to throttle the motor manually (if that's easy to get to on your motor)? Wonder if the throttle itself isn't messed up.

I have a tracker with console and side control not tiller.Starting to thing the cable might be the problem.

Oh yeah....well same type of problem maybe...yeah, if the cable and linkage isn't providing the full range of throttle.

Ok bud I just got message. Had to get another phone.....mnine got run over and had to wait.....just got back to work last week sooooooooooooo.........
Anyways sounds like one of 2 problems....you already checked your hub so thats out. The suggestion of thhrottling manually is a good one while someone else drives. You might try that but also when its on the trailer you can take a look as well. Throttle up and mak sure you dont have anymore left on the throttle advance arm and at the same time look at the carb butter flies. If they are not open to 90 degrees from closed and this is CRITICAL thwen you have a linkand sink problem.......and I might add those little motors are more unforgiving than the bigger ones. Take a look and then get back to me.

I peeked in with the cover off and it looks like the choke is almost closed when running WOT.I do use what seems to be quite a bit of fuel for such a little motor.
I've heard of syncing, but not sure what the heck that's all about.
Thanks for your help Lazer, hope I can get this straightened out.

One other thing..The voltmeter will go up to about 16 volts after running WOT for a while. If I put the running lights on it doesn't go up too high.

Ok you have found your problem but now gotta find out why. Something has moved and with that butterfly partially closed that means that you are giving it fuel and NO air.....hence the reason for the "large amount" of fuel being consumed. What a link and sync is is this.........It means that your throttle arm, timing arm and butterflys are opening at a rate that the motor needs or in realtion to each other so that the motor runs correctly. EXAMPLE: A motor at 3000 rpm needs x amount of timing advance, fuel and air. At 4000rpm it needs some more air, fuel and timing advance.
A link and syn is not something you wanna try if you are unfamiliar with outboards. It actually is better left for someone "in the know"
