Spinning reel for dropshotting
My fishing buddy is looking for a new spinning reel this off-season, and he'll be using it exclusively for dropshotting next year. He is currently looking at a couple of Shimano reels -- the Symetre and the Saros. Can any of you offer any insight as to what, if anything, makes the Saros worth the $30 price bump over the Symetre? I really like the Symetres I have, but I've never used a Saros before. Any other brands in the $100-$130 price range that you'd recommend he take a look at? We both live just a couple miles from a Cabela's, and we tend to get all sorts of money-saving coupons from them during the winter, so it's pretty likely he'll end up buying a brand they sell.
Thanks for any help you can give! |

I'd stay with shimano at that price point. Also, anything from the Sahara up is pretty much more than adequate, if not overkill.
Fortunately, $100 buys a WHOLE lot of spinning reel. One feature I like about my shimano reel (symetre) is that you can add line to it as you would a baitcast reel. That's what it says in the manual and that is a major plus for me. I'd go with the 2500 size for great long casts when necessary, and more than enough line capacity, even when fishing deep. Anything from the Sahara up is going to be phenomenal. Given the choices you mentioned, just check our their site to see what the slight differences are. It is probably only one or two "minor" differences.

Hey WB I don't do a lot of dropin but for me the rod and line are the critical componets of this technique. Of course once you hook a fish you should have confidence that your reel has a smooth high quality drag etc. Both of the reels you mentioned should serve you well, I have several symetres and find them hard to beat in that price range. There are some serious droppers here that I'm sure can give you some good input.

Best reel you'll ever find for $50. They are all I use. And right here in BF.com for sale forum:

I've tried a lot of different reels, including the Supreme and Symetres. Both of those are really nice but this year I bought several Stradic FIs on sale for $129 and I like those better. They seem to cast farther but are a little heavier. I never did get any of the Ci4s to try, maybe next year.
I have also tried using smaller reels, and they just don't work as well as 2500 or 3000s. |

Thanks for the replies, guys. I see the Stradic 2500FI is one sale at Cabela's right now for $129.99, so I'll pass all this info on to my buddy.
