Default curado anti reverse pawl

Do any of you guys remove the anti reverse pawl on the Curado e series…..does it make a difference. Also I use braid 10 lb on most of my set ups if that matters?

I have them removed from my E series reels, Curado and Citica. It makes a difference in how smooth the reel feels. There is no danger in removing the pawl, unless the ARB fails. Some of the JDM counterparts to our version of these reels do not have the part installed at the factory.

I don't think it makes any difference which line you use, you may be a little more prone to ARB damage with braid than you would be with a line with a little stretch, but doubt it is significant. Try it yourself, it only takes a second to pull the part out.

The AR pawl is a redudancy that many quality reels lack. Your drag should give way before any internal parts fail. Removing it is easy and will do no harm. On the other hand it's not hurting anything either. Another personal preference at the end of the day.

So removing the pawl enhances smoothness? I think I am going to have to try this.

So when would the ARB fail. I guess what I mean is under what conditions would one fail assuming proper maintenance of the reel is done?

Not sure of the failure rate of the ARB, but I am betting that it is significantly low since most reels have no backup for the ARB. I know I already mentioned it, but many of Shimano's JDM counterparts do not include this part and some of their upper end domestic reels do not have it either.

Look at this way, if you don't feel like there is any benefit to removing it, you can always put it back in.

Thanks, Tav. I'm going to remove it and try it out.

I’ve worked on some reels that had the reverse bearing covered in oil and grease and the angler had told me their reel was slipping. I would flush the bearing and lightly relube and the problem would go away. That’s not to say that sometimes it may just be a bad reverse bearing.

If the drag is locked down tight fishing braided line, an excessively strong hookset might damage an AR clutch but it would not be a concern IMO. The AR pawl can make a slight ticking noise that some customers find bothersome, but as far as feeling smoother it's presence (or lack of) is barely noticeable.

The ticking noise is why removed mine. I haven't noticed any problems without it.
