Jig Bite?
When does the jig bite usually start for you guys in the winter? For me i have a saying, after the first snow which was yesterday, is when they will heat up? When do they start hitting jigs in the winter for you guys?
Ryan

I've heard many that recomended Pork once water temp gets below 50 degrees. The idea is that the plastic gets harder the colder it gets. I can't comment on whether or not its true, so I'd just recomend going with a combination you have confidence in.

The reason is when the water gets below 50 the plastic gets hard and pork stays soft. Plus, the bass are lethargic at that temp and pork feels more natural than plastic. To answer the original question they work year round, not just in the colder temperatures.

The reason people use pork in the winter is its more bouyant, which slows the drop rate down that people don't ajust for on their own. The second thing is they have been soaked in a salt brine solution so the bass will hold on to it longer.

In the colder months I like to use a either a natural or blk colored bucktail hair jig with a blk/chartreuse uncle josh 101 pork trailer. Works good for largies or smallies, not just in cold water but in heavily pressured water to.

I use plastic year round and catch fish, I make my own and I make them soft so I don't worry about it, It gets very cold here to and I have no problems catching the fish on the plastics.

Use whatever you have available. I recommend buying a assortment of jigs rather than an assortment of trailers. P N J

As Joe knows, plastic can be made to any softness one desires and the the action parts can be made thinner for a pork-like action, with the slightest movement. Plastic is already buoyant (floats) and can contain salt if added.
The temp of many waters in NY is below 50 and quite a few guys are still hauling in 5-6 lb bass using jigs and plastic trailers. |
