There was a loon doing some fishing of its own in the same bay my wife and I were fishing on the morning of 7/4 and I got a couple decent shots of it. Man, do they have awesome markings and colorings! They are just all-around amazing birds and we are fortunate to have many of them on the 1,400 acre lake where we have a summer cabin. Hope you guys enjoy these...

Although its appearance is duck-like, I believe it is "just a bird," not a duck. The Common Loon is the MN state bird. Read more here. The band around its neck is a cool teal-looking color and their bellies are just the snowiest white you'll ever see. And to see them take off and land is just spectacular. I wish all you guys who have never seen one could have the opportunity to do so at least once. They have several different kinds of calls and, well, they are just COOL!

They have pointy beaks, totally different from a duck's bill.
But they are truly a beautiful bird. You have to love those blood-red eyes.

Realy nice photos again! Thanks for posting them. I love having loons around while I am fishing. I spent a lot of time fishing in MN growing up when we took our family vacations there. We never saw loons around my home waters. But that has changed in the past several years, as I now see then quite often here. They are a beautiful creature.
