Default Registration and Title

Ok, I want to buy a small jon boat and fix it up and put a trolley motor on the back. I already have a couple in mind that I might buy. All of them are old used ones off craigs list and for sale for anywhere between 100-300 dollars.

Im wondering if I go buy one of these and put a trolley motor on the back, what would I have to do to make it legal? I live in pennsylvania. What if I dont know the make or model of the boat? Im really into fixing up this boat, but I'm a little worried about it causing me some troubles legal-wise.

Help me out guys, I'd appreciate it

A quick Google search gave me this:

Looks like you have to title it, since it will have an outboard motor (the trolling motor counts, I suppose), and register it, too.

I believe PA is like NYS and you have to register any vessel with a motor...even if it's a trolling motor. For a boat like you are referring I don't think a title is required, but you should have the bill of sale on hand. As far as Make/model - Aluminum Jonboat may be sufficient.

Whoops, just read a little further. If the boat is less than 14 feet, or older than 1997, you don't have to title it.

Have the boats you're looking at been registered previously? If so that would make it a whole lot easier.
I would assume the seller would know the make and model, although that's not a sure thing.
If you're buying used, you will probably have to rely on a written receipt.
It really shouldn't be too difficult for you to get it legal.
This might not really apply to you, since I'm in Michigan but I had this boat for 12 years or so but never put it in the water. Went to register it this last spring with no receipt.
All I knew was where I'd bought it, how much I'd paid, make, model and VIN#.
The secretary of state had me fill out some paperwork with all that info and they faxed it down to Lansing.
They did a title search and junk. It came back clean so I went down and registered it later that day

I was talkin to Boyoboyle. Check with your DNR. usually when you hang a trolling motor they want the numbers on it. Should be a plate on the boat somewhere that might provide a hull number. hope that helps.
