Default new trolling motor

i have a 95 javelin 350A its 15'6" and last yr i bought a 40lb thrust minn kota....when im out on the lake and there is alittle bit of wind i have to run my trolling motor on 4 speed and that causes my battery to drain down pretty fast...so this yr i thought about getting a 55lb thrust minn kota...if i was to do so would i notice much of a change in how long my battery will last and will i see a big change in the power of it? thanks weidner21

That motor should push your boat great! I used to have one on a 17' Ranger and it did ok on battery life but I had to run it on 3 but with the 15.5 boat you should be able to run it on 1 or 2 and go all day. Also, check out the new Minn Kota bowmounts they're a little cheaper but are just as nice as a high class trolling motor.

Weidner, is that TM a 12 or 24V motor? If it is a 12V the more powerful motor will drain your battery faster. If you move up to a 24V motor you will probably have a lot longer battery life. I've got a 17-6 Nitro that came with a 43lb thrust TM (12V) that really wasn't big enough for that boat and the battery drained real fast. I upgraded to a 71lb (24V) TM, and when I take it to an electrics only lake and use it all day on 5(high) quite a bit I have never used more than half of the battery power. The downside is it takes 2 TM batteries, but for the extended range you will get it was sure worth it for me.

its a 12v.....dont really want to go with with the 24v cause all i have on my boat is a 48 johnson so i dont want the added weight....i plan on getting a 99 procraft with a 120 on it next yr so then i will upgrade to the 24v when i get that boat

Different props can affect battery life/speed also.

Good point, Lizards. Weidner, I bought one of the Kipawa props advertised on this site on Bassintom's recommendation, and I can't recommend one highly enough. It is a fantastic prop-cuts down on battery use and truely is weedless.

Go with the kipiwa unless you wanna get a 24v. And for future reference any boat be it a 15'6" or a 21' will always do better with a 24v. Motor lasts longer due to the fact that a 24v operates more effeciently on 24 than at 12.
