Default Research Paper Ideas?

Hey guys, I have to write and 8-10 page research paper for one of my classes at BGSU. I want to do something associated with fishing. It is designed to be an argumentive paper, but not too much of an argument. (Not favoring one side of the story).

I was hoping that you guys can give me some topics that are fishing related to do this paper on. Keep in mind, that there has to be some books out there on the argument as well. Any ideas that you have, I would love to hear! Thanks

Ryan

It may be too recent for books, but I'm sure there are a lot of papers and essays regarding the history and invasion of the Asain Carp. Especially with the new concern of the Great Lakes.

What about the actual number of tournament fish kill versus the activst boycotting them and inflating the count for their benefit.

Sounds like those activist got the skills to be fishermen.

How about catch and release affects on fish population and size as opposed to keep and eat. And catch, photo, release, and replica versus mounting.

LOL....

How about a research paper on states where you can win a tournament without a fishing license?

I did a couple of interesting research papers when I was in school. The first one was about the impact of Largemouth Bass Virus (LBV) on bass populations where the virus is known to exist. Since the virus has not been found everywhere, the locations are more localized. However, I have not heard anything in the past couple of years about the virus. The other project was on the economic impacts of the bass fishing industry in the US. There is plenty of information about both. 8-10 pages should be pretty easy.

Really, you have to be careful doing a research paper on your hobby. Look at it from the perspective of your professor. Are they going to give a good grade if you turn in "buzzbait secrets for big bass"....? Hell no. More than likely they wont know half of what you are even talking about, which will put you on a path straight to a C- even if it is well written.

Not to mention doing a paper on something you already know about is not really research. I would recommend something more scientific, like invasive species...there is a huge uproar in Illinois over the asian carp going through some locks into the great lakes. That would be a real research paper that is even timely, and would likely get you a better grade. It would involve elements of science, history and current events, the type of trifecta that really gets teachers off.

I agree with WTL. I was thinking along the lines of invasive species as well. And we've sure got a ton of them. Zebra Mussels, Gobies, Asian Carp, Alewives, etc.

You could do the impact of the Gobies on the smallmouth fishery in Erie (for the argument, whether it was a positive or negative effect).
