Line colors
I have read all the technical specs on the different colored lines. I know that red is supposed to be the first color on the spectrum to disappear in water, but wanted to know what you all thought. I figure the sales sites on the line will say anything to get me to spend the money. I would rather not throw 30+ dollars down the drain when I can use it for that quarter tank of gas to get me to the lake instead.

It really is pretty simple: If you think the color of the line helps or hinders you cathing fish, it does. It all comes down to confidence. I saw a segment on In-Fisherman on red line and that was their conclusion.

Bass do detect red. Bass are not necessarily attracted to red. Red will disperse quicker than other colors of the spectrum, depending upon water conditions.
That's what Berkley, (Pure Fishing), and Doug Stange, (Editor In Chief: In Fisherman), came to conclude. |

Thanks Reb, if it is all mental, then I am in trouble. I am swapping out the line on my bait caster tomorrow for a trip this weekend and figured I would ask.

IMO, red line and red lures/hooks are a gimmick, and say pretty much the opposite thing. If red line "disaprears" whatever feet below the surface, then shouldn't red hooks and such? If bass can supposedly see the red hooks or markings on baits, Then why can't they see red fishing line.
Yes, bass do follow blood trails, but they do it by scent. Take BPS's Bleeding Tennessee Shad color as an example. (color 03: http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/st...005000_100-5-1) I don't think that those 5 little red dots on the side of the bait create a blood trail. They just make it look like the fish has five little red spots. I'm not saying that red baits such as rattle traps and such are a gimmick. Those are very popular and have proven their fish catching ability over and over for years. BB

Most of my hooks are red just because that was the color that was there when I bought them. If I do have the choice, I will still pick red. I figure if it does help than I have that added advantage. If not, the hook itself is still sharp so I am no worse for the wear.

Every fish I've cought the last few years has been on Cajun Red line. Only line I've found that I really like.
Actually, that's somewhat of a lie, but not really. On my dropshot setup which I've used once, I've got the Trilene Maxx in moss green on, and I do like that for no line twist, but the rest has been on the Cajun Red.

ditto what Reb said... quality of line is more important than color IMO

For me, I was a big fan of braid line for a long time....until recently! Red was always my go to line, but after recently fishing with someone who fishes the Bassmaster weekend series trail and finishes in the top 10 routinely (and we are talking 80+ boats)..interestingly enough none of his rods had braid and I literally fished the same lure and same style all day and caught half as many fish...so, I have switched half my rods to clear mono & half to clear Floro and only a couple have braid..my strike count has gone through the roof!! I am now back to lovin' fishing again... I don't care about the hype, and I think as long as you cut back your mono/floro lines once they start gettin worn down you don't have to worry about losing fish...just my thoughts

I relly think ....this is just my opinion.....that a lot has to do with how much the fish are pressured and what they see. Some of the smaller private ponds that I often fish doesn't matter what color. They hit. Some of the larger resevoirs they seem vary wary and any option you can use to decrease that spooked feeling helps.
