Cool Tip: Spooling a reel
Here's a simple idea that comes from a recent Bass Master magazine tip that cut's to Kevin's 'complaint' about notches in line spools and standing up to line manufacturers...
Blank CD's and DVD's often come packaged on spools and when empty, can serve as a decreeling tool for spooling up a reel. You can optionally use a rubber (hose) washer under the spool for just a bit of tension...

Great idea man.
However, I don't think it would solve the "notch problem." In the case of spooling spinning reels, the suggested way is to spool them with the line going out over the side of the spool. Hard to explain, but if you watch the video, it'll make more sense. It's still a good idea, and with the hose washer for tension, my mom can't get upset about the phone book never being put away lol. Excellent idea!...I currently use a coaster holder from the coffee table, not always consistant, but it works...Might search around the office for one of these cd cases,
Thanks

But the line didn't go on the spool that way...so why not take the line off the spool the exact reverse of the way it went on there?

That will definitely work.
However, there is a another solution. Pick a reel like a Sahara, a Symetre, or better, and you won't have to worry about this irritating issue. Why? Because even Shimano instructs you to spool line onto the reel just as you would a baitcaster. Why fuss around? Incidentally, I have spooled my "lesser" spinning reels as a baitcast reel and have never, ever had a single problem I have another use for a CD case lid, ie, the other piece. I use it as a low tech testing tank.
