Backlash Solution; Does this work with BRAID TOO?!
Hey, I'm sort of new to this forum... I think this is actually my VERY 1ST POST on a topic of MY CHOICE. Great site! I'm always reading up on what people have to say or ask... Very interesting!
Anyway, I was outside in my backyard practicing my Pitching/Flipping Technique... until I finally got a backlash! (I thought I'd never say this, but it felt good... being that I'm from Canada... our regular fishing season are a lot shorter than those down south! hahaha... thats how much I miss fishing during the off season!) Anyway... as I was saying... I got into a "Backlash" - I then tried Kevin's technique/solution to correcting this found HERE . I tried this technique, only to find that it DIDN'T WORK. Now, I'm thinking because I was/am using BRAID... that this application/solution doesn't apply. Can anyone verify this for me?! Does this solution only work for MONO and FLOURO?! Thanks Folks! Rob

I don't think it will. It works on other lines because they are stiff.

yes it does work on braid.i've removed 99% of the worst backlashes that way.try reeling against your thumb longer than he is.

Welcome to the Nut-House man!
Since I watched that video, I haven't gotten a single backlash, so I wouldn't know. kidding, of course. I usually don't remember to use that trick though. I have used it on mono and it worked fairly well. I haven't tried it on braid, but I'd assume it would work, I saw Bill Dance do it with braid. If you're using heavy braid, I'd think it would make it even easier. (How heavy is heavy btw?) BB

I've used it on braid and it does work, but it does take longer and you really have to have a "heavy" thumb.

This trick works VERY GOOD on mono and fluorocarbon (and copolymers). It's effectiveness does decline with braid slightly... But to answer your question, yes, it will work with braid and is always worth trying first. If you have a horrendous backlash with braid, that's when it will really lose effectiveness.
I cannot recommend a tip for baitcasters more. Give the thumb trick a chance and you'll quickly come to love it. Though my video shows an instance where it takes about 7-8 tries to get one loop unstuck, most of the time it takes only one try. |

Great Video..I have never seen that before...I think the best part of that technique is that you don't sacrifice damaging your line to fix your birdsnest.

I got one of the worst birdsnest i've ever got recently, and before I started my usual picking and pulling, or cutting, I decided to try Kevins tip.....and lo and behold it worked great....I was fishin again within a few seconds.....it was a great tip that i'll remember.....I was using mono at the time.

It works for me every time, never had a time when it did not..... and I'm a braid ONLY user. Did you make sure to press down, VERY hard when you where doing it. If it doesn't work, try tightening the drag!
Welcome to the form. Hope this helps, good luck and good fishin!

I was at my brother in laws and we were working on his reels...and one of his reels got a bad birdnest from a previous person who fished with him, he spent 30 minutes trying to get it out and he thought he did and when he went and cast it, it blew up again even worse than before...I mean it was bad...He went to grab the cutters and i told him to give it to me bc i wanted to try to get it out...He laughed and sad sure why not...I told him to give 3 minutes....and i got it out in 2 with kevins advice...he was speechless...It was mono, but i have done it on braid as well...

i looked at it and sometimes the braid is just really old it gets way inder itself... so instead of getting caught once it will get caught multiple times so it wont work... just keep pulling and when it stops the line usually it will be the line coming out and then the line will be wrapped around in a "U".... grab the "U" and pull it for as long as possible this will get it out... sometimes when the braid is old a U will get stuck on a U and that U will get stuck on another.... you just have to do it a couple times... hope this helps

That way has worked for me almost every time, whether mono or braided. The important thing is never ever just keep yanking on the line to pull it out.that seems to tighten the knot.Your first reaction is to try pulling on it.Don't do that, try this way before you do anything else.Spraying your line with Wd-40 or KVD line treatment seems to make it work better.
