If it's nice and sunny, a buzzbait. If not lipless cranks or a sweet beaver t-rigged.

This is what I.ve learned from an x -pro... after ice out generally speaking there is NO thermocline... the water at the suface is colder than the water on the bottom... thus the ice on the surface... the water on the bottom is warmer & is more akin to the fishes comfort zone.... that's why I have used the silver buddy style bait & will use a jigging spoon as well...that is if you consider Jan, Feb. spring fishing... As oflast weekend the water temp here in central va is 44-45*. That being said some bass have been located in shallower water... My son caugth a nice 2# on a jerkbait... but they're not quite commited to the shallows yet.

Here it is cold during ice out so you hit the creeks that run into the lakes about mid April or ice out.I use the small sweetbeavers and small ugly otters and of course the 3.5"Yamamoto tube in #33 color. If the water is 40 degrees or better I'll add spinnerbaits, rapala DT4, DT6 crankbaits to the mix.A red or orange rattle trap is hard to beat when they're working. They don't always work but they are dynamite when they are.Reel the trap along ticking the old lily pad stems and crank as fast as you can and still tick the stems sticking up in the creekbed. If they hit spinnerbaits, reel the trap fast and forget about ticking the stems, there is no such thing as being able to reel it too fast. You want to have that trap moving faster than you would think would work.I like the sugoi traps from Gary Yamamoto but I'll use the old Bill lewis traps in the chrome red or discontinued #27 ? color(orange/brownish backed craw pattern color)I like super spots rayburn red or tomato.I'll take a chrome trap and color it red with a sharpie pen in a pinch.
If I'm fishing the main lake,I'll use deep diving stickbaits, suspended jerkbaits, shad raps off the hard breaks of the lake , especially near the spawning flats. The fish will be suspended out off the breaks of the flats over deep water. sometimes they chase bait up on the flat and I like to throw a red or orange rattle trap around the flats as well, since I'm there. |

Same here, although Bass season opens April 30th. By that time, unless it;s been a really cold Spring, the first things out of my tackle bag are spinnerbaits and Aruku Shads. Topwaters were big right off the bat last Spring, but we had great weather leading up to the opener

At the end of that warm spell we had, we still had a good 6" of ice, but you had to jump over some open water along the shore to get to it.
