shallow cranking line and worm fishing line
whats everyones line of choice for shallow cranking around wood cover? also whats your pound test preference for worm fishing around weedlines or sparse cover. ive been switching between 12 and 15# test but i like the fall of a senko better on 15# fluoro. just looking for opinions.

Most of the time I will use Super Silver Thread line in 12 pound test for my crankbaits. In areas where I'm looking to bounce cranks off brush, and rip over and around weedbeds I'll up the same line to 14 pound. For worm fishing, I like to use Silver Thread Excaliber in 17 pound. I'm always working worms around cover of some sort, and I like the heavier line to get those bass out of trouble fast. There are exceptions to these rules depending on special situations and presentations, but overall as a rule thats what I use. In really heavy nasty cover I'll go with 40 pound Power Pro for my worm fishing.

I like 15lb green big game for both, sometimes I'll go to 12lb for the cranks but most of the time I'm fishing it in some type of wood cover and a 12lb line will make it run too deep, resulting in a hang up.

Wow, you guy's use heavy line. For worms I use mainly 6 or 8 pound Seaguar. I don't throw shallow cranks much but have 8 pound line on one reel for small ones and 12 pound Seaguar for another for bigger ones and 12 pound Halo for traps.
I don't fish much wood since there isn't too much around here, mainly just weeds. |

i use 10-12lb flouro or mono for all my cranking and 12lb or higher for jigs and plastic worms. i only use flourocarbon for jigs and plastic worms because i get better feel and a lot better hooksets. as far as shallow cranking goes the more you do it the less you will get hung up. as you learn the difference between the bait hitting something or a fish hitting the bait then you won't get hung up too often. i like 10lb mostly because of the long casting this line offers and if you check it for knicks and frays it is plenty strong for this type of fishing.

Well for plastics I use anywhere from 6lb fluoro to 50lb braid, but set the hook said something about senkos, so I put what I use for senkos, but I'll tell yall the rest
Shakyhead:15lb braid with 6lb-8lb fluoro leader Texas Rig:50lb braid OR 17lb fluoro depending on water clarity Carolina Rig:50lb braid with 10-12lb mono leader Senko/Fluke:15lb mono Floating worm:12lb mono Drop Shot:6lb fluoro Topwater:15lb clear mono Lipless Cranks:15lb clear mono Spinnerbaits/Buzzbaits:20lb green mono This is normally what I have spooled up for the lakes I fish, but line is probably one of the cheapest ways to change your presentations so keep many different styles and size for different situations. I fish Power Pro braid, Berkley big game mono, and BPS XPS fluoro, but just make sure you use quality line it will pay off in the long run. Just my >02 |

I shallow crank mostly with 10-12 lb. XPS Fluorocarbon or Pline FloroClear. For t-rigs (depending on where I'm at) 15-20# of the same lines.

Shallow cranks - nothing under 17lbs (those RC's cost too much!)
Plastics - ranges from 10 to 25lb - increase in cover increases the lb test |

Thats exactly why I use 20lbs flouro. I don't want to have to worry about breaking off in the least bit when there is a $20 dollar crank on the end of my line. the RC's are awesome for shallow wood, I still haven't found a better crank for coming through laydowns(though I recently bought some little johns to try).

For shallow cranking I prefer a M/fast action spinning reel setup spooled with 10 or 15 lb Power Pro or Sufix Braid as I'm converting over with a 10 lb mono leader tied with a Albright knot.
For Senkos or other weightless plastics, I use a MH/fast action spinning setup spooled with 10 or 15 lb braid and a 10 lb mono leader. |
