The entire length of the Potomac river has been lucky in the past. Trout to smallmouth to largemouth to catfish to stripers. Name your poison.

I fish loch raven and love it however if you familiar with Centennial you may want to give triadelphia resv. a shot as I have heard good reports from there also. I havent been yet but plan to go.

Yes you can shore fish from loch raven. There are a cr@p load of trails that circle the loch (which is very large) that have openings and shores to fish from. For whatever reason i have been catching fish using a strike king crank in sexy shad the past couple months, however with the vegetation growth that has been getting more and more difficult to use. There are trails that go both north and south on both sides of the dulaney valley bridge as well as on loch raven drive.

The Potomac is 1 of the best bass fisheries on the east coast if you have a boat and are not afraid to get a little grass on yur T/M, i just went out of General Smallwood the other day while there was 2 tournaments going on. 1 was the PVA and the other 1 was i believe an ABA tour, and i was only fishing right around the bend on the left as you go out to the main river and was in between two boats, we were well apart no one was hogging, anyway 1 caught a nice 5lb 10oz LM just dragging a worm thru the grass, i also had quite a few in the 1 to 3 lb range, so when you can fish amid those 2 tourny's and still have a great day, i would say for sure, if you have a boat, the Potomac is the best spot in Md to wet a line. jmo

Best way to fish the Potomac form the shore is to wade the upper sections of the river. Plenty of places to walk in. Check the water depth at Little Falls. The river is best at 2.4 to 2.8 feet. Anything above 3.5 feet is tough and it gets dangerous over 4.0 feet.
Grab an old pair of shoes, shorts, and t-shirt and a handful of baits. Best time is in the afternoon after 4pm. Watch out for the T-storms as they tend to roll down the river. |

If you've never waded a river before make sure that
1) You can swim (kind of expected but.....). If you can't then wear a life vest. 2) If you get into deep water and slip, get your feet up to the surface (so they don't get trapped). 3) Shins get busted up on sharp rocks. Be prepared. 4) Always go out with a friend Couple of spots on the upper river that you can wade. Rt 9 bridge, White's Ferry, and Point of Rocks (Rt 15). All can be waded easily at this time of year. Next month and Sept will be very nice too. |

When I wade out into water with my chest waders, I make sure that my back foot has a strong foot hold and is on something solid before I transfer my weight to the next foot. You never know how soft the ground is when you take your next step. If you sink past your knee, you will have one heck of a time getting it out. Just move slow when walking and be careful and don't panic.
