Help! I sprayed my spinnging reel off with water...

Now it's stiff when I'm reeling the line in. How do I lubricate it or what do I lubricate it with? It's my Pflueger President spinning reel.

I did some catfishing yesterday and got chicken liver and worm gook all over it. I spayed it off with the water hose when I got home. I went to go get it ready for tomorrow and noticed it was super stiff and had this clunky feel when I was reeling it. What should I do?

I think what happens when you spray your reel with water is that the grease gets forced into the gears and binds the reel up. Also, any dirt and grit will get pushed into places that impede the reel. I would recommend searching online for some good reel cleaning instructions. There are plenty out there. That way you can wash off the old lube and put some new on there.

I rinse my reels after being in salt water.(always recommended) Never had any problems. Something else might be wrong. The fresh water shouldn't have caused any problems.

I've had reels do that before, I usually just dunk them in the lake to try to free them up. I think what it is that the water pushed something into one of the bearings. I would try to wash it again, maybe take the handle and spool off and wash it. Then lube it up. I put reel oil on the spool shaft and reel it a few times to get it down in there and then a few drops on the bearings under the handle and the cap on the opposite side. I don't know if the President has an access hole to the gears or not, but if it does then a little reel grease in there is good or maybe a couple drops of oil if that's all you have.

I flood mine from time to time.....Spinning and Casting....never seems to bother them but it sounds like to me you have some of the worm gook and Chicken slime somewhere inside....I would take apart and clean (as much as you are comfortable taking apart) a reel service tech is usually fairly reasonable in price. I try to rotate mine and have a tech look at each of mine annually....

I make it a point to hose my gear off using just minimal water pressure. No need to force water into the inner working of the reel. All the crud is superficial and I think for the most part until the season is ending a gentle rinsing should keep you going. At the end of the year I open them up and deep clean and lube.
