Default Abu Garcia Center Drag reel problems

I cleaned and lubed my Abu Garcia CD-400 reel recently because it was not retrieving smoothly. Now the anti-reverse isn't working and it's still a rough retrieve. Can't figure out what I did wrong. Any help would be appreciated. I have the schematics from AG and another center drag reel for an example and still can't figure it out.

Once a spinning reel is rough, you will probably never get it smooth again. Cleaning and relube is something you should do to prevent a reel from getting rough in the first place. Once it gets rough, you need to replace parts. On a spinning reel, every gear works together, so you will need to replace every gear. That may or may not fix it. It could be bearings or bushings in which case you will need to replace all of those. Then it could also be any part that rubs or slides on another part. The worst thing about rough spinning reels is that it's usually a combination of all those things. The best fix for a rough spinning reel is to buy a new one.

I clean and lube my reels before and after every trip to camp and for my trip for opening week of bass season in Michigan. I do the same before they are stored in my custom cabinet for the winter. This one just started acting up in the middle of the last trip. I suspect you're right that even though I couldn't see any obvious damage, I'll need to replace parts if I can still get them. No one that I know of makes a center drag reel like the old Abu Garcia reels that I like so much. If you know of a source for a new CD-4000 for under $100 I'll replace it in a heartbeat! In the meantime I'm stuck using my other reels which are all in great working order but just not the same. Bummer!
