Default thunderstruck-smallmouth

caught this 16 1/2 inch smallmouth today at green river lake.i caught 3 small fish and was gettin ready to move to another hole and decided to make a couple flips to laydown on a rock bank.i been fishin a black and blue jig all winter but tied on a 1/4 ounce bluegill thrunderstruck with a net baot alabama craw trailer.the 2nd flip the fish hit hard.i was pretty tickled with the fish,it is not a lake falcon lunker, but for our lake this is a pretty good smallmouth.

I know nothing about smallmouth , but that looks like a largemouth to me , is it possibly a spotted bass ? I thought smallies were alot browner than that pic.

Yeah, I believe they do have red eyes. I havent ever caught a smallie , I am sure your more aware of what you caught than I am.... I just thought it looked light , could be the light from behind.

cmorg,im second guessing my self now,it is light looking in the pic.if it was a largemouth it had the smallest mouth i have ever seen my partner caught a spot yesterday, and we was talking bout the red eyes,i have a pic of it but it is on my phone, and i dont have a usb cord for it.

nice fish no matter what kind of bass it is,lmao. i had one today on a jig (not the thunderstruck, saving them till i learn to use the jig properly, lmao)that would have went 5 or 6 pounds. lost her right at the boat. great job. and would you mind posting a pic of the trailer? i ahve the jig you used, wondering about your trailer.

bama, just stick with the jig,it is a confidence thing, more than any bass bait imo.once you catch the first fish on a jig,i think you will find they will come easier and easier.today,i caught 2 fish on a bandit spring craw near a laydown,so for once i made the right move,i got to thinkin that maybe i should work that laydown with a jig for a bigger fish, and sure enough it was there.

Nice fish, but it does look like a LM to me also.

Just for comparison purposes, here's a pic of me from last summer with a SM on the left and a LM on the right - http://www.flickr.com/photos/1014600...7606000449949/

And for whatever it might be worth to anyone, this is how the Minnesota DNR tells how to distinguish a SM vs. a LM - http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/fish/bass/small_large.html

Based on the last picture you posted, I'm going to say it's a spotted bass.

that is a kentucky or "spotted bass" depending on where you are from they are called different things. either way great fish and i am glad the jigs did their job.

Default spotted bass

That is a kentucky spotted bass. I catch them all the time here on guntersville and Ive also caught alot of them on lake Lanier. I got my biggest one there on a lucky craft pointer, it weighed right at 4 pounds.

don't sweat it, a lot of people mistake ketnuckies for different members of the bass family. if you ever catch a mean mouth which is a cross between a kentucky and a smallmouth it can be really hard to tell. i caught one in a tournament one time that really threw me for a loop. in the water at the edge of the boat i thought it was a kentucky, then while i was taking the jig out of her mouth i would have swore it was a smallmouth. then in a picture that was taken at the weigh in you can see that it is actually a cross and has characteristics of both.
