Yeah, Lake Chotard is just a little ways north of where I grew up. We saw a huge gator up there once while fishing. It was easily 12-13 feet long.
I would have liked to see this old fish returned to the lake, but I guess it died in the net it was caught in.

I agree, it is a shame that it perished. Sure would have made a great aquarium attraction.

i was just about to ask that. what do they do with a record breaking fish after they catch it asides from taking measurements?

Wow thats huge!!! And I'm glad to see it, but like the others I wish it had been able to be returned to the water. I just saw a show on tv recently about aligator gars and they talked about how it's getting hard to find the true giants that were once common because they have been slaughtered for decades.

I love these things with, ketchup, cocktail sauce, tarter sauce. I could eat a 30 count box with NO problem with a cold beer.

They're donating this one to the Museum of Natural Science here in Jackson. It'll be mounted and put on display there.

that's good to know. i've always wondered how the process works when u catch a potential record breaker. can't imagine that u wait at the docks & contact the wildlife conservation (or whoever it is that records these things) & get it measured. by the time everything is said & done the fish wouldve passed...even if u kept it in the water

It is illegal to catch them here, but they are all over, and they look like a loch ness monster when they break the surface.
