Big trouble?!

Took the boat out today and about 4 the motor came up with a problem I don't like very much. I tried starting her and the first time she almost fired but then killed. Then I tried again and the starter made a bad high pitched noise. I took the cover off and the starter was turning fine, but the "flywheel" or whatever when the starter spun up had seized up, creating major resistance. The resistance was enough that when I tried starting her I could see the gears on the starter starting to strip. Is this an internal problem? Piston?

On an 89 35 horse merc, am I looking at major overhaul - or just getting rid of it and getting a new motor?

the fly wheel is froze??can you turn the fly wheel by hand?? normally this means it is broke inside.crank shaft likly. but it would have made more noise than 10 cranky's in a barrel when it was used last..

Can't turn it by hand good. I never used the rope to manually crank it so i don't know how much resistance there normally is, but I tried to crank it that way and I could never have gotten it to spin up so there is defintly some resistance.

Is it odd for something like this to happen when starting it up? It wasn't running when whatever broke broke, it was in the process of being started.
