Default Old Reels

We have been talking alot about the newer reels, with their bearing counts, and available gearing, so on and so forth. It made me stop and think about some of the old stuff that I use to use to try and get it done with. I went to the garage and dug out these oldies but goodies. Thought I would share them with you, and hope that maybe you could post some of your older treasures.

What they are, and I am sure some of you are quite familar with them.

1.) The original Ronco Pocket Fisherman
2.)Garcia Abumatic 60, one of my first reels, it was given to me by my Grandmother. It has got to be at least 60 years old.
3.)Diawa Millionaire 5HS
4.)Shimano Bantam Magplus 250Xsg XHS xtra high speed at 5.1 to 1, my first low profile BC.
5.)And last but not lease is an old Zebo 33, seen alot of action when I was a teen.

Funny thing is, I have no doubt that I could spool some of these up and still catch fish.

Love the Abu-Matic. Brings back a lot of memories.

My Dad used that very same model Diawa Millionare into recent years. I made him stop, as it had worn out past all use and he ended up cussing it every trip. But as a collectible, its nice. He has a silver Garcia which is a pretty decent reel for topwater.

Tell your Dad that if he is ever looking for one, that I have one that was only fished on Sundays by a little ol lady. Well maybe a little more than that

Haha, I just engineered it so that he would have to fish with a Revo Premier. Don't think he will be needing that.

BTW, the Millionare as the name implies was an expensive reel in the day.

Guess I can't blame your Dad for using the PRM over the Millionaire.
I got it as a gift from my brother back in the early 80's if I remember correctly.

The Abumatic was also an expensive reel for its time, it was produced from 1957 - 1962 and sold for $29.75. My Grandparents were very common people and did not spend money on things like this. I have no idea where my Grandmother got the reel from. She gave it to me when I was no older than 5 or 6, and she fished with a cane pole. Probably not worth much now, but I would not get rid of it for anything.

Default Lookin good

Tavery5,
Looks like you have the beginnings of a good antique collection. Have you ever owned one of those so-called "automatic" fly reels? I'm referring to the ones that had a spring mechanism that wound up as you paid out your flyline, and then you could press the little lever and it would retrieve the line for you.

I had one of these as a teenager, and one day it got jammed. Being the typical teen know-it-all, I figured I could take it apart and fix it. As soon as I took the cover off, the big spring went "SPROINGGGG" and uncoiled out into the room. My dad was a mechanic so he had all sorts of tools, and he spent close to half a day trying to recompress that damned spring into the housing. He finally got it, but it never worked right after that, and I guess I threw the reel away. Too bad, because you don't see that type fly reel these days.

I have started a collection of spinning reels with the drag adjustment in the rear. None of them are very old yet, but by the time my kid is an old man, they could be worth something. I do have a Mitchell 308 UL spinner (not rear drag) that I purchased in 1967. Maybe it qualifies as an antique.

.

The fly reel sounds very interesting, I never had an oportunity as a kid to use any type of fly reel. We did however use a couple of other reels that I wish I still had.. anyone remember the old black plastic zebco 202, and the green and white zebco 404. I sure burnt through alot of those as a kid, it would be cool to have 1 or 2.

I would love to see pictures of some of this stuff if you guys ever have the chance. I love to see how reels have developed over the years.
