Default Lamiglas Excel build

I just finished up a build on a Lamiglas Excel blank. It is 7'3". Lamiglas specifies power by number, it is a fast action 4 power. It feels like a MH but it has a really soft tip, should be perfect for Senkos. I used size 5 Fuji Alconite micro guides.

I plan to use it mainly for Senkos, Flukes and small paddle tail swimbaits. It weighed in at 4.2 oz and is umm....really orange. I have it paired with a TD Fuego. Thought I would share some pics.

Man Joe, that looks absolutely great!

I was really excited to see this one after how much we talked about it on the chat. The blank is a great color, more copper than most pictures show. The threads transition the blank color into the color of the Fuego (which I love as well).

Makes me want to get an Excel (or at least a blank) for my Fuego and get rid of the Vendetta, lol.

You really should ship me this combo for me to take pictures of it.

That is a beautiful build! I hope you can post a report on how it performs. I am a lamiglas fan and heck, I live just 2 hours away from their HQ.

Thanks a lot guys! I'm so used to dark rods with black wraps that I wasn't exactly sure what to do with this one. I'm definitely going to go a little more low key with the next one.

Bigbassin, I thought about you when I was taking the pics. Good pictures are tough to take.

IB, I am a Lamiglas fan too. I have 3 builds on Lami blanks. I've fished this one for about 3 hours so far and caught a couple of little bass on it. Sensitivity seems to be outstanding in my limited use. I had no problem feeling a really light finesse jig bite.

That looks great, Joe. I have buddy tying up a Mudhole blank for me right now. He's using the micro guides on it as well. It will be a black rod like the other two Rainshadow blanks he tied for me already. He's calling it his "Porko" series (my handle). I've never cast a rod with micro guides so I am anxious to see how it performs.

Thanks Bob. Let us know your impression of micro guides whenever you get your rod. I've got them on 3 rods now and so far haven't found any negatives. I should get the components for a 7'6" flippin stick with tiny size 3 micro guides today.

I am going to swing by their HQ some time next to see if I can pick up a blank for my first rod build. There might be an excel or certified pro blank in their bargain bin. Watching you and the others is giving me the itch to build a rod and I don't need a new hobby. Once again, mighty fine work. The excels look pretty nice off the shelf, but you definitely kicked it up a couple of notches.

What top are you planning to use with this build? Been thinking about building a new flippin stick. Have to get my swimbait rod done first though!

I'm using a braced SIC top from Acid Rod. It's the only braced micro tip-top I'm aware of that comes in large tube sizes. It's the one that costs $4.25 about halfway down on the right hand side. It came in today and seems very sturdy. Time will tell.

Heres a question from someone who has never done squat to a rod excpet replace a broken tip guide...

I have an old Lamiglas Spinning Rod that may be as old as me. I LOVE this rod. It was a favorite of mie for years, but the reel on it gave up and i havent used it much. It is really showing its age... is this rod still good even though it looks old and beat? If so is teh blank still good to have someone rebuild it to a new rod again, and would it be worth it ???

If the blank is still structurally sound it could be completely stripped down and redone. As to whether or not it would be worth it, depends on how much it means to you. You are probably looking at a cost of $200+ to get a rod stripped down to the blank and completely rebuilt.

How much would he be looking at if he took the time to learn the process and did it himself?

Really depends on what components he used. Stripping an old rod down is a lot of work, you could however use cheap components and not spend a ton. It's really hard to estimate. You would have to buy epoxy, thread, grip material, guides, reel seat, everything on the rod. You would also have to buy or make a wrapper and a dryer and have some way to keep tension on your thread....So it's hard to say for sure. Check out Mudhole and see what components go for. Oh yeah, figure in high shipping costs on top of that.
