jumping fish
i know there are different theories but i dunno what works best, What do you do when a fish jumps? keep pressure on it, stick rod tip in the water, give it slack ? what do you do?

Keep that line tight! Dont give it any slack. I was fishing a lake last weekend. My buddy and I caught 14 bass. 10 of those 14 jumped out of the water. We didnt loose a single one because we knew to keep that line tight. One thing you want to think about is what direction the fish is swimming in vs. what way you are pulling on the rod. You dont want to pull the rod in the same direction the fish is swimming in.....or you will pull the hook out of its mouth. If they are jumping out of the water, its most likely because you are doing the right thing. If they spit it out on the jump, it wasnt meant to be.

keeping the slack out of the line is the main thing. when the fish is out of the water it has no resistance to fight back so you need to take adavantage of this. when he jumps keep reeling and even pull the rod back to make sure your hook stays set.

when i feel or see my line coming up towards the top of the water fast i stick the tip of my rod down in the water to the opposite side of the fish. If you do it right, and keep enough pressure on the fish, the fish will either not jump or it wont throw the hook.

Interesting thread - I mostly fish from the banks so a lot of times sticking my rod in the water is not an option. But I have pretty good luck just keeping the tension on, but I will try the tip in the water next time I'm fishing from a boat... Ry - I see from your picts you fish from a canoe sometimes, me too, I think I'd probably dunk the canoe if I tried the tip in the water thing...

Another vote for sticking the rod tip in the water.

I have to agree with the above. Keep the line tight and rod low.

I just try to make sure my rod tip is bent for the entire fight. Smallmouth don't care where your rod tip is, they jump anyway.

i went fishing for smallies yesterday and i usually lose them on the jump. i tried putting my rod tip in the water when i felt they were gonna jump and i didnt lose one on the jump. you should try this because it worked well for me and i was surprised at the results.

I have the same problem as brushhog, I fish from the bank a lot. I keep my line tight, and the rod tip as low as I can get it when they jump. The main thing is to keep the line tight, if you slack up on it the bass might shake the hook loose and spit it out. Just my novice opinion mind you.
