Default Stupid REEL!

Everything is fine with my crucial rod and pflueger president, except for one thing. My reel has a horrible unsteady drag. You can pull, and the rod will jerk back, because of the unsteady drag. Are $140.00 reels like this?! My $70 reel performs better with the drag.

I think I'm gonna have to drive another 30 minutes and take it back. UHH!

Most likely it was packed from the Factory with too much grease and oil in it.It will smooth out once you use it a bit. They normally are a dry drag system, but most likely there is as I mentioned. you can set a lighter drag setting and strip line off by hand then reel it back up before your loose line tangles up on you. Once the friction of using the drag alot, it will wear the foreign material from your drag system and work properly.Make sure your setting the drag properly for the lb test your using and always back the drag off once your done fishing. Leaving the drag system tighten down will compress the drag washers and the result is a insufficiently light drag system. I hope this helps.I personally love my president , but I would not have chosen that reel for a younger person. Its is a very difficult reel to cast well in all types of conditions unless you train your thumb to help control backlashes. The President I have casts farther than any other reel I have ever had and is liquid smooth, but it is not my favorite for all lure presentations and fishing conditions. P N J

pnj
is right -for once- pflugher's need a break in period. they over pack them with grease.. and i also have to agree an uneducated thumb does no good with a prez reel..they are about the toughest reel for a beginner to jump to..

Thanks guys. Yesterday I couldn't cast very far at all. Well, I was very low on line. Last night I respooled and casted a few times. I couldn't see because it was dark, but it felt like I was getting a longer cast. This morning I tried to cast and omg! I can easily cast 50 yards in low wind conditions. It is super-smooth. I really don't get backlashes. I have the tension knob at the loosest setting it can go, but I feather the spool.

If peeling line off of the spool with the drag in use doesn't help, I'll exchange it.

I had the hardest time picking between a viento and president. I'll probably get a viento next year.

Thanks-

Julien

I'm taking the reel back. My dad is saying the reel is going to turn in to garbage because it's made in Korea. I don't know what to get. I'm lost.
He's saying I should believe him, and get something made from Japan.

HELP!

dont take it back, listen to what pnj said,it needs to be broken in to work right. give it some time,it will work. i think that reel is one of the best reels out there for under $150. if you do take it back, try a team daiwa advantage super tuned. they are the same price i think as the president.

lock the drag star down and reel against it.this will remove any oil if that's your problem.it may take a while and then it should start to grab.

Yeah Dodge. I figured that would work just as well. I've pulled hundreds of yards of line out.

Not yet. I'm not confident that it will work. It seems like a bad drag. Are the drags usually smooth on the presidents?
